Day 18 - own formulas
I know that the word formula hidden in today's #ThoughtSpotAdventCalendar trees sounds scary and unfriendly. But I assure you, you can manage it. The good news is that life will be easier with today's knowledge, but if you have a friendly person who is responsible for building the data model then they will implement the formulas already in the model. This can even be done by building the model directly in ThoughtSpot but that's an extended topic for another day. In the meantime, I invite you to open door number 18.
When performing data analysis with #SpeedOfThought, we do not always have all the measures or attributes available. In our data model, the measure value is missing but we have the measures quantity and price. So we can quickly count this and define value measure. You can see how to do this in the example below.
As you can see, it is not as complicated as building a rocket. You open the appropriate window, give a name and enter the formula. The available fields are prompted. At the end, the selected measure is given to you and you can do everything you have learned so far with it. You can add filters, group by selected attributes and create visualisations.
You can even combine own formulas with measures available in model. Value is defined, Quantity is directly from data.
Custom formulas can be much more advanced. When creating them, you can make use of the many built-in functions that are available in the formula creation window on the right. As an example, I have used the unique count function to count the number of orders. Based on this, I built a measure that shows the number of unique orders.
The result is finally presented in a line column chart. You can see for yourself that we did a similar calculation one of the previous days directly in the formula bar. So you are not condemned to formulas.
I know that their own formulas can scare people. You can do without them but it can be easier with them and you won't have to wait for someone to develop the data model. Now relax, watch the World Cup final and tomorrow the next part of the #ThoughtSpotAdventCalendar.
