Day 15: It’s More Than Who You Know

Day 15: It’s More Than Who You Know

In chatting with my coach a few weeks ago, she reminded me of the importance of network. Reminded might be a light word to describe it. It may have been more a firm believe that my next role was not going to be from a cold application, but rather a warm introduction.

I have been reminded multiple times over the past few weeks how important a network is. I will admit, I have been a part of the #socialsaturdaysquad previously, making connections and trying to connect others. I did my best when engaging in these social events to not look at them as a connection or follow grab - rather a way to intentionally connect with a broader network of individuals who I may not have normally had the opportunity to meet. And I had some great virtual coffees and connections as a result.

These events broke down barriers for me to connect, because as personable as I may be, networking in a group setting is not my jam. I freeze up, become that awesome listener, and walk away drained. My partner is a master networker - I watch in awe and am ready for a nap just observing.?

For me, the 1:1 is always my stronger networking tool. I love having virtual coffees with people - not with a specific purpose but with a general reason to connect. If we have a reason, great. If there is a mutually beneficial relationship to be built, even better. If it’s a knowledge drop and story told, fine by me. I never know where they are going to take me and you never know what a difference they can make.

I’ve also been so surprised with the network which has popped out to me in the past few weeks. Because of people I previously worked with, I’ve had a few virtual coffees which have promise in helping me figure out what is next. While meeting the new people was great, it was so heartwarming to have multiple people encourage connection with one of the individuals. I’m not counting on anything other than a connection - but knowing I made an impression was a great boost when I’ve been feeling a little less than.

As I start diving into the search, I know how important these connections - both new and long-lasting - will be for my next step.

What’s your favorite networking tool? Seen any great LinkedIn outreach messages? Want to grab virtual coffee?

My position was created specifically for me as a result of my network initially offering me contract work and my ability to demonstrate the value of my work to the company.
