Day 11 in the Wendy House

Day 11 in the Wendy House

I've been thinking about leadership today. I read a lot about leadership and have in the past spoken about followership (which incidentally I think is much more powerful). A key area for me of good leadership the leader who creates a "3 deep" situation. What do I mean by this?

Well, a lot of entrepreneurial organisations have a figure head, someone who is there blazing the trail and ripping up trees. They have charisma, influence and energy. If that person is somehow not able to function (as is the situation we currently have in Government), we need the 3 deep approach to carry on making decisions, moving forward and ensuring survival of the organisation.

It can be very difficult for leaders to share their power, but if the decision making, knowledge and information is shared 3 deep, then you can take two people out of the organsiation and still function - maybe not at full capacity but it can be done. 3 deep doesn't necessarily mean 3 levels or 3 deputies, it can mean cross functional responsibilities, but 3 people who know what's going on.

We have seen our Prime Minister flanked by his advisors in the news briefings - 3 deep. Today is a prime example of how my theory should work. We will see.

Very true, The strongest organisations will have this layered approach to give them the resilience to pretty much any crisis.
