DAY 10: Office Irritation Micro Hackathon: The Complainer

Welcome to the final irritant and persona in our Office Irritation Micro-Hackathon! Thus far, we've tackled numerous office woes that both frustrate and interfere with success at work! Today, we address a challenge that can test even the most patient souls—the Complainer!

We all know that one person who can turn a sunny day into a thunderstorm with their constant grumbling. But, why is everything so hard?! The Complainer is never satisfied with their work, your work, the team’s work, or the company as a whole. They criticize and micromanage at every turn, bringing everyone around down with them. That’s not productive or conducive to a happy workplace!

?

So, how do you head them off at the pass and start to breathe a little bit more positivity into their perspective and the workplace?

Micro-Hacks:

1)???A Compliment Goes A Long Way - It's a fact of life—complainers gonna complain. But instead of letting their negativity bring you down, take the high road and spread some positivity! Whenever "The Complainer" unleashes their gripes, find something to genuinely compliment them on. Praise their problem-solving skills, their sense of humor, or their dedication to their work. Watch as the complainer's complaints transform into a sea of smiles, and they'll start seeing the silver linings themselves.

?

2)???Shift Form Complaint-to-Solution - Instead of letting the complainer vent endlessly, take the reins and steer the conversation toward finding solutions. When they voice a concern, empathize with them, but then encourage them to brainstorm possible fixes together. By involving them in the problem-solving process, you not only show that you care but also empower them to take a more proactive approach. Who knows, you might just turn your Complainer into a “Solution Seeker"!

?

3)???The Empathy Escape Hatch - Despite your best efforts, some complainers may persist in spreading gloom and doom.? Instead of reacting with frustration, try to understand what might be causing their dissatisfaction. Maybe they're going through a tough time personally, or they genuinely feel unheard. Show genuine concern for their well-being and offer support if appropriate. Sometimes, all it takes is a compassionate ear to help them shift to the positive.

??

If all else fails: Embrace your inner CEO and deliver a reality check that leaves no room for misinterpretation.?Schedule a meeting with the workplace Karen/Kevin. Calmly but firmly address their behaviour and its impact on the team and productivity.?Use specific examples to back up your points and outline the consequences if their actions persist.?By taking a strong stance, you demonstrate that their behaviour is not acceptable and show your commitment to maintaining a harmonious and efficient workplace.

?

Keep in mind that you will get more flies with honey than vinegar. It is important to approach workplace challenges with empathy and understanding first. However, sometimes the direct and assertive path is necessary to set clear boundaries and stop toxicity in the workplace.?It’s critical to use judgement in selecting the best approach for the office interpersonal situation. By right-sizing your approach to match the specific situation, you maximize changes for a positive and lasting change for all parties.

?

And with that… ?

"Shift from complaint to solution" is brilliant! While there's catharsis in voicing a complaint, that shouldn't be where it ends. Being part of the solutioning is powerful.
