The Dawn of a New Era: Children's Voices Resonating in the Halls of Change

A Poignant Beginning

Walking into the stately Grand Palm Hotel , a venue renowned for hosting presidents and high-level dignitaries, I was struck by a different, yet equally profound, gathering.

Here, in Botswana's finest hotel, was a simulation of a parliament, but with a twist - it was filled with children, brimming with confidence and clarity about their vision for the future. The air was electric with their enthusiasm, a testament to the potential and passion of our younger generation.

The Power of Youthful Insights

Khumo, a young delegate, stood up and presented his argument with a maturity far beyond his years. "I don't understand why teachers assume we need to be beaten to be better kids," he argued passionately. "They can't raise us how they were raised." His words echoed in the hall, igniting a heated debate that underscored the event's professionalism and the gravity of the issues discussed.

The Children Takeover Parliament

The event, marking World Children's Day, was more than a ceremonial occasion. It was a powerful display of children's resilience, courage, determination, and wisdom. The State of the Children's Address, conducted in a mock parliament style, was not merely an exercise in democracy but a significant step in empowering children to stand up for their rights.

Coding and Robotics Competition

In a notable highlight, the Destination Imagination team, led by DI alumni Leleti, conducted a robotics and coding class. This initiative was not only educational but also inspirational, showing the importance of STEAM education in nurturing the problem-solving skills and creativity of our youth. The winners of this class were awarded STEAM education books, generously donated by Edustore Africa

Closing Celebration

This landmark event would not have been possible without the support of 联合国儿童基金会 the Government of Botswana and all stakeholders. The commitment of UNICEF Country Director Joan Matji , her amazing team members Tuduetso Kelapile MSc and Resego Mzwinila , senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and civil society representatives, was instrumental in turning this vision into reality.

Edustore Africa Commitment to STEAM Education: Showcasing Excellence in Learning Resources

A special acknowledgment is warranted for CONCILLIA LEBURU and Chedza Phambuka whose exceptional efforts played a pivotal role in showcasing EduStore Africa's STEAM education resources at the event.

Their dedication to presenting these invaluable educational tools was not just a task but a mission to inspire and educate. Concillia and Chedza's expertise in highlighting the significance of these resources ensured that the attendees, especially the young minds, understood the importance and potential of STEAM education.

Their contribution was further accentuated as they awarded STEAM education books to the winners of the robotics competition, a moment that symbolized the fusion of learning and achievement.

This action celebrated the budding talents of the competitors and emphasized the critical role of technological and scientific education in nurturing future innovators.

The Journey Continues

As this chapter closes, we are reminded that this is just the beginning. The plight of children requires our continuous attention and action. The mantra "Not about us without us" should guide our efforts as we strive to build a better world for our children. The Children's Parliament at the Gaborone International Conference Center is a beacon of hope, signaling a new era where the voices of children are not just heard but are integral in shaping the policies and decisions that will define their future.

Together, we can achieve the Africa we want and a better world for our children, where their rights, aspirations, and dreams are not only recognized but actively nurtured.

I'm not surprised to see a nation like Botswana fostering the mentality, education, and changes that are needed. Even more reform is necessary in Nigeria, Chad, Niger, the DRC, South Sudan, Zambia, and Somalia.
