Early Fascinations: The Origins of Artificial Intelligence

Long before AI became a buzzword, humanity was already dreaming of intelligent machines. In the 15th century, Leonardo da Vinci designed mechanical automata—early attempts to mimic human and animal behaviour. These creations were rudimentary but marked the beginning of our pursuit of artificial beings.

By the 18th century, the Mechanical Turk—a chess-playing automaton—captivated audiences. Though it was later revealed to be a hoax, its influence persisted, laying the groundwork for game-playing machines and sparking debates about what constitutes intelligence.

The formal groundwork for AI was set in the 20th century.

  • Bayes' Theorem, introduced in the 18th century, became a cornerstone of probabilistic reasoning, which is vital for modern AI models.
