David Bowie was one of those musicians who inspired my writing. When I was writing "Johari's Window," the starry sky in my novel was as inseparable from David Bowie as it was from Van Gogh. David Bowie was the soundtrack to my adolescence, and he has remained in my head and in my heart throughout the many transitions in my life. He was an inspiration for my self-creation and recreation, as much as James Joyce. He was forever fresh, young and innovative. He symbolized, for me, freedom to make and be yourself. He stood in for the magic and wonder of the universe, and my curiosity to explore it, as much as Dorothy's red shoes.
