Dave Ulrich @ CSHRP - Nov. 7th - "Organizational Culture and Agility"

Culture, one of an organization’s key capabilities, is a key executive challenge and outcome of HR work. Dave Ulrich will be sharing his wisdom and expertise -- providing innovative ideas, specific tools, and action plans.

When: Tuesday 11/7/23

Starting at: 11:00 am PT, Ending at 12:00 pm PT via Zoom

Session Objectives:

Individual talent and people matter, but collective culture and systems often matter more. Peter Drucker is attributed as saying, “culture eats strategy for breakfast.” Culture, one of an organization’s key capabilities, is a key executive challenge and outcome of HR work.

Why culture change matters?

Research shows and corporate directors, financial auditors, and business executives at Davos believe that “culture” matters and is an increasing challenge in today’s organizations, particularly with hybrid work when people may not be face-to-face. We will build a business case for investing in culture change as a means of transformation.

What culture means?

The concept of culture has a host of definitions, terms, and concepts. We will review three historical waves of looking at organization culture and an emerging fourth wave.

How do we institutionalize culture?

There are five steps to make a desired culture real:

Step 1: Define the desired culture.

Step 2: Build an intellectual, top-down agenda.

Step 3: Encourage a behavioral, bottom-up agenda.

Step 4: Design and deliver a process, side-to-side agenda

Step 5: Create a leadership brand.

These five steps are not a perfect script for the culture change agenda, but they suggest a simple (not simplistic) playbook to approach culture change that creates value for customers and turns cultural aspirations into daily actions.

Participants will leave this session with the ability to better assess and improve their organization’s culture and how it relates to transformation. Dave will offer specific actions to make culture change a reality.

CSHRP - Community for Strategic HR Partnership Robert David Thanks for the kind invitation to share some ideas about creating a culture playbook. Most know what a "culture" feels like in terms of values, system, and norms. I want to build on this logic and talk about how to build a culture inside the organization that creates value outside. This evolves the definition of culture and makes it even more of a competitive advantage. We hope to build a culture playbook for building the right culture. Look forward to the discussion.
