Microsoft – Latest Loudoun Co Land for DC Purchase
There’s no slowing down to land purchases for data center construction in the data center capital of the world, Loudoun Co. Virginia. Last week we reported on Digital Realty’s project, today’s it’s Microsoft’s 66-acre acquisition for $93.7M (the highest recorded per-acre price paid in the area to date). This purchase will enable Microsoft to compete with the neighboring AWS and Google facilities for data center availability zone in this geography.
The largest colo provider in the world was conspicuously missing any data center offerings in the 2nd most populous country in the world. Until this week, that is. This week’s news was about Equinix’s $161M investment in two Tier 4 data centers with 90K SF of space (when fully built out) in Mumbai, a facility that hosts 12 telcos, over 130 ISPs, three internet exchanges, eight cloud service providers, as well as a number of content delivery networks and over-the-top content providers.
Poland’s Beyond.pl Plans Data Center Expansion
When the expansion from 8MW to 42MW and doubling the whitespace to roughly 485K SF is completed, it’s 2nd data center in Poznan, Poland will be central Europe’s largest carrier neutral colocation space. This is just another illustration that even the dreaded coronavirus has not managed to halt European demand for cloud services.
Facebook Begins Construction on $800M TN Facility
Just outside of Nashville, this facility will be powered by renewable energy, utilize 80% less water than an average comparable site, provide 100+ high paying jobs, foster another 1,500 or so construction jobs over the next three years, and bring with it a significant investment in local community, with boosts for small businesses and other related investments.
China’s Huawei Builds Exposed DC in PNG
China’s practice has been to give loans to developing countries on a condition to spend the money on Chinese contractors. In Papua New Guinea that money was spent on Huawei to build a data center for housing the government activities. However, though the facility is mainly finished, the data migration never went through. Why? Many reasons, not the least of which is compromised security protocols, which would provide a backdoor for Huawei, and the Communist government of China, to exfiltrate the data. The same thing happened in Ethiopia, where information was being pulled for 5 years before the discovery was made.
