Dataset > Data Asset > Data Product

Dataset > Data Asset > Data Product

Doug Laney inspired me to define these three terms - I just want to keep these definitions here for future reference:

A "scholarly" version:

  • Dataset is a measurable and portable unit of data.
  • Data Asset is a dataset evaluated in its current state.
  • Data Product is a data asset augmented to a marketable / consumable state and wrapped in metadata indicating all of its product metrics: quality measurements, intended use, origin, provenance, sensitivity, validity, etc.

A "conversational" version:

  • Dataset is what you manage
  • Data asset is what you value
  • Data product is what you sell

Referencing Doug Laney's books:

  • Dataset = material (data)
  • Data Asset = Dataset subjected to Infonomics
  • Data Product = Data Asset subjected to Data Juice
