DataRobot Resignations Won't Fix The Problem

Good people will keep resigning because their conscience can't handle what they're discovering - that people can be really bad. That given the opportunity they will totally milk a situation at the expense of other people - and it's usually the people doing the actual hard work. They want no part of it, and seek to distance themselves as quickly as possible before it rubs off on them. I totally get it. I'm the type of person who will actually run from a situation like that. It really does rub off on us, and every minute we stick around we feel we're compromising just a tiny bit more of our values. And we really are.

Ben Taylor explained why he resigned from DataRobot in his latest post. I love this part showing how he had simply voiced what everyone was feeling: I've cried more in the last week than I have in the last year. I'm fine. I'm crying for the employees who have sent me messages like: "Thank you for saying what needed to be fucking said! You saved us! I stand with you! Thank you for your bravery this week. You bluntly said what we all feel. This is what true leadership looks like! A profound thank you! If Ben is still evangelizing then things might not be as bad as they seem. I, unfortunately, need to keep working here. Thank you from the bottom of my and my family's hearts. I am about to resign as well". It's a lot, it makes me emotional.

No matter how much we develop in our morals and ethics, we always find ourselves lacking something, and more and more problems and crises abound in our relations.

What's The Real Problem?

The real problem is that don't understand the system we live in and its rules. If we did, we wouldn't be concerned with doing the ethical thing because we'd have a clear roadmap for making all our decisions. The rules of the system we live in mainly come down to one principle, to take the benefit of the whole into consideration in everything we do. This is really about our thoughts and intentions toward others, and has nothing to do with our assets or anything material.

By contrast, morals and ethics are codes of human conduct at a given moment in time. For instance, if harsher methods of communication were considered norms in the past, even to the point of cruelty, then the more we developed, the more moderate and friendly these behaviors became.

Here's where the problem really starts. The rules of the system are opposite to human nature, which is a desire to enjoy at the expense of others, and which is in constant growth. The more the human ego grows, the more our morals and ethics change in order to let ourselves get along with each other more conveniently at different stages of our development. But no matter how much we develop in our morals and ethics, we always find ourselves lacking something, and more and more problems and crises abound in our relations.

Human development gradually leads us to the need to reach balance with the rules of the system. And today, we are more willing to understand this than ever before.

Up until now we thought we could bend the rules to our benefit - but that's not working. No one is really happy or satisfied.

The Challenge

So how do we make that leap from being governed by the human ego—trying to adapt and observe morals and ethics in order to get along as optimally as possible—to becoming governed consciously by the laws of the system we live in? The whole purpose of the system if for us to learn to harmoniously connect with each other, and discover the positive forces we can generate from the system through our harmonious connections.

We make that leap by learning and practicing how to positively connect in a social setup. This will help us learn to adjust our lives to suit the rules of the system, rather than the other way around. Up until now we thought we could bend the rules to our benefit - but that's not working. No one is really happy or satisfied. Once we start consciously applying the rules of the system, which are mainly about how we treat our fellow man, we'll come to experience a whole new kind of harmony, happiness, confidence and peace filling our lives. We'll learn to clean up the toxic energy everywhere that's killing us inside, and learn to actually be happy.
