Editor’s Note:

In this issue, we dive into the cutting-edge world of artificial intelligence. From Google's innovative tool that can watermark AI-generated text to Apple's seamless integration of ChatGPT, AI is becoming more sophisticated and accessible than ever. However, the open-source community is facing a storm of controversy due to unexpected licence changes by major players like HashiCorp and Cockroach Labs. On a lighter note, Amazon has once again raised the bar in the e-reader market with its latest colour Kindle, offering a vibrant and immersive reading experience.

Open Source: Trouble because of sudden licence changes

Open source software offers significant financial value, but recent licence changes by projects like HashiCorp and Cockroach Labs have sparked community backlash, emphasising the need for trust and strategic planning.

Bookcase can turn an iPhone into an e-reader

Amazon made a big splash in e-reader land last week with the release of its first-ever colour Kindle. When it comes to devoted e-readers here in the States, Amazon is very nearly the only game in town. Plenty have tried to knock the Kindle off its perch, but the brand maintains around 80% of the market.

Here’s how ChatGPT integration works for Apple Intelligence

Developers on Wednesday got their first taste of Apple Intelligence’s ChatGPT integration courtesy of the newly released iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 updates. The integration arrives alongside other Apple Intelligence features, including Genmoji, Image Playground, Visual Intelligence, and Image Wand.

Google releases tech to watermark AI-generated text

Google is making SynthID Text, its technology that lets developers watermark and detect text written by generative AI models, generally available. SynthID Text can be downloaded from the AI platform Hugging Face and Google’s updated Responsible GenAI Toolkit.
