Datalogic safety initiative to protect frontline store workers

Currently, most frontline store workers are exposed to danger when a customer hands over their loyalty or membership card. There is a risk of infection transferred from the card plus breaching the government advised 2m physical distancing.

Datalogic has a simple and effective solution – an easy to deploy secondary scanner mounted under the PED. The customer can use this to automatically scan their loyalty/membership card (either from plastic or smartphone) without coming into close proximity to the checkout operator or having any direct physical contact.

This solution is already deployed at numerous UK retailers such as Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Pets At Home and many others. Additionally, it improves checkout productivity and the customer journey. Most of the time lost at the checkout is in customers searching for their membership cards. If the loyalty/membership card is requested and scanned concurrently to the item bar code(s) the checkout operator is scanning, then overall checkout time is greatly reduced.

Datalogic 2D bar code scan engines are compact and easily mount to a SpacePole underneath the PED holder which requires a small bracket available from Ergonomic Solutions. The scanner themselves can be connected to the auxiliary port of most Magellan scanners with no changes to POS software. Additionally, these could be connected to a separate USB port on on the POS, in which case some minor changes would be required.

I for one would rather forget my Nectar points than risk contact, so great solution

Nice work Colin. A popular solution for sure. Anything that can reduce the amount of interaction and handling at the checkout right now is likely to be a good idea.
