Datacenter Multi-Tier Infrastructure Architecture Decoded

Multi-Tier architecture for data centers provides a substantial approach to analyze the absolute and customized efficiency depend on uptime and performance.

In the year 2005 TIA (Telecommunication Industry Association) published the TIA-942 standard to reduce system failures.

Furthermore, Uptime Institute created a standard Tier classification system as a reliable method for effective structure of the data centers. The tier classification system is a unique method to enhance measure the performance of data center. Currently most industries prefer to use the standards provided by the Uptime System.

Uptime Institute offer four disparate standards for infrastructure. Viz. Tier I, Tier II, Tier III, & Tier IV.

Tier I is a basic level of infrastructure and provides no redundancy. It provides 99.67% of availability. Tier I have 1729 minutes of annual downtime. Tier I infrastructure e.g., if the primary source of power goes down there will be no redundant power supply available.

Tier II infrastructure may have 1361 minutes of annual downtime which makes it up to 99.44% availability. It also provides an additional power source in 24*7 environment.

Tier III evenly adds more value and provides redundancy at Hardware level along with power supply. It accomplishes 99.98 % availability with only 95 minutes of annual downtime. Tier III infrastructure is a concept of Concurrent stability, eg: if we take system down for maintenance, it will unceasingly provide service. It has a slightly low level of redundancy while some components are down but the system has some resilience. Tier III has a couple of generators for power backup.

Tier IV standard is the most efficient one which offers dual power cooling. Tier IV infrastructure is Fault tolerance infrastructure. It provides 99.995 % of availability with only 26 minutes of maximum annual downtime. Tier IV is the utmost tier in Uptime Institute’s levels of tiering.

“Amazon Web Service (AWS)”, operates its data centers in calibration only with Tier III guidelines provided by Uptime Institute.

“Yotta”, a Hiranandani Group company, has achieved certification of design documentation by Uptime Institute, USA for their first data center – Yotta NM1. Tier IV infrastructure is the absolute resilient infrastructure which provides redundancy at all the levels starting from Power & Network path up till Hardware redundancy. It provides 2N+1 redundancy means system have two times power paths, diverse network paths. There are very few data centers spanning over the world who are designed and equipped to achieve Tier IV level of services. Yotta NM1 data center is one of the phenomenal Tier IV certified data centers in the world.

Octamicro has partnered with AWS, Azure & Yotta Infrastructure services for solutions around Cloud & D.C.
