Data = Value, or 'Lost in Translation'

An extract from this Forbes article highlighted one of the biggest challenges organizations face: bridging the gap between investments in data and the tangible value it delivers to the business.

“We don’t need more data jargon. What we need is greater clarity of communication in explaining exactly how and why data capabilities deliver business value in language that can be understood by data and business leaders alike. Only then will we overcome the gap between data capabilities and delivery of meaningful business value…”

In my experience, here are some key questions that can help assess whether your analytics team is facing a ‘lost in translation’ challenge:

  • How aligned are your business stakeholders with your data and analytics strategy? How would they describe it?
  • Does your team regularly share a “report card” that quantifies the business value ($) delivered by your data initiatives in the past year?
  • Do your business stakeholders have a clear understanding of the opportunities, the reality of the challenges, and their role in maximising your organisation’s data potential?

Great note, Alan Lowthorpe. I think that there is still plenty of work to be done helping companies find the right balance between the data strategy following and enabling the business strategy, and the business understanding the art of the possible with data in a rapidly evolving landscape.
