Data v. Tech: a distinction with a difference
Let's start by defining Data and Tech:
Tech -- combination of hardware and/or software technology used to process data (e.g. a Dell laptop with Windows 10 OS and Microsoft Excel)
Data -- computer encoded information used in technology to produce a desired information product (e.g. content of individual cells inside an Excel spreadsheet)
Tech holds and processes Data. Data is the necessary input to Tech and the desired output from Tech.
In other words, Data is the raw material and Tech is the toolset used to get the input Data in the desired combination for the finished output Data.
Data is the fuel that runs through a Tech engine. Tech can create new Data through capture and digitization of input Data or from editing input Data. But without Data, Tech is idle equipment.
But what about the quality of the Data and the Tech?
Good Data + Good Tech = Good Outcome
Bad Data + Good Tech = Bad Outcome
Good Data + Bad Tech = Bad Outcome
Bad Data + Bad Tech = Bad-Bad Outcome
Talent is a factor.
One last example. All pizzas are made from the same basic ingredients. Why does one pizza taste better than another? Ingredient sourcing is one factor (Data + Talent). Cooking tools like oven type (Tech +Talent), and the application of experience and knowledge in preparation like receipts (Data + Tech + Talent).
The perfect mix for your goals is out there.
