Data Unleashed / A monthly publication
Welcome to my October Data Unleashed newsletter. I have a myriad of thoughts I’m eager to share with you.?
Outstanding recognition??
This month’s breaking news is that our Privacy Team has been shortlisted for not one, but two different Awards. Women in Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) (Team of the Year) and the Piccaso Privacy Awards, that recognise people who make an outstanding contribution to this dynamic and fast-growing sector. In fact, they’ve been shortlisted in three different Picasso categories: Outstanding DOP, Privacy Team of the Year and Privacy Leader of the Year.?
Of course, we must hold our breath for the final results. But these short listings are a tremendous accolade, and I am immensely proud of our pioneering, all-women privacy team – that brings together deliberately diverse career backgrounds and deep subject matter expertise. Thanks to their kaleidoscope of skills and knowledge, they continue to exceed our client expectations when it comes to data privacy law, technology and change management.?
Data-first security, scalability, and resilience
Staying with data privacy and I am thrilled that we are partnering with a prestigious new client – the Medical Specialist Group, hailing from the Guernsey in the Channel Islands. MSG provides high quality affordable specialist health services – and to do that its team needs cloud-based technology infrastructure to underpin its digital transformation.
Among many other things, this will enable MSG to leverage its new electronic patient record system that will improve healthcare and ultimately save lives.
CEO of The Medical Specialist Group: “Calligo identified our requirements and put together a package that met our needs. We were also impressed by the relationship. This is not just a commercial relationship. We wanted a strategic partner and a trusted adviser to work really closely with our team. This will give us resilience and security.”

AI: friend or foe?
In other news…consider this: the total annual energy consumption of bitcoin is the same as Norway. I find that staggering.
As?Joe Baguley, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, EMEA, VMware?and?our latest podcast?guest explains,?“AI and machine learning is about huge things, huge data sets, huge computation actions … all of those have huge implications in terms of energy. But those renewables could have been used for something else, right?”
When it comes to Artificial Intelligence and climate change, it’s clear there are many unanswered ethical questions about whether there should be stricter governance, standards, and precedent set.
My very brilliant colleagues and hosts of our?Beyond Data?podcast series -?Tessa Jones, Calligo’s VP of Data, Science and Research?and?Sophie Chase-Borthwick, our Data Ethics and Governance Lead?– discuss this in great detail in the latest episode ‘AI’s Climate Jekyll & Hyde’.?Do tune in?[TPW1]?and share your thoughts with us.
As always, please do get in touch with me if you want to discuss anything in this newsletter – or how Calligo can help you and your team become data-driven decision makers.
