Data tech as Political Capital

Data tech as Political Capital

The use of data to make socio-political decisions is not a new concept. In fact, the history of data and its use in politics can be traced back to ancient civilizations. For example, the treatise Arthasastra by Kautilya (probably written during 321 -296 B.C.) during the Mauryan period had a detailed description of the system of data collection relating to agricultural, population and economic censuses in villages and towns during the period.

With the advent of internet, we have seen a consequent rise in data literacy across globe and its usage has become even more widespread and sophisticated. Data and technology have changed the way we look at the world and continues to shape it in a different way. Nowadays, every industry be it health, food, finance, automobile, and many more, benefit from employing data analysis techniques to improve communications and scale up their operations.

Political domain is no different. Gathering information about people's interests, habits, and demographics, political parties tailor their messaging and approach to specific groups of people. With the ability to analyze large amounts of data, political parties can identify and target key voter segments, fine-tune their messages, and optimize their campaign strategies. This gives them a major advantage over their competitors, as they can focus their resources and energies on the areas where they are most likely to have the greatest impact.

India has a long historical tradition of collection and use of various types of data, and its usage will continue to define modern day politics. We at Jarvis leverage data and technology, keeping people-centric approach to enhance the capabilities of political parties and government units in the following ways:

1.?????Data as Political Asset – Volunteers/cadre data, polling data form-20, voter rolls, data collected during campaigns, events etc.

2.?????Data as Political Intelligence– Survey data, media or social media analysis, demographic dynamics, etc.

3.?????Data as Political Influence (Communication) – Micro-targeting, Message dissemination, mobilizing support, shaping public opinion.

To put it creatively, Data has been becoming the harmony of hopes and fears that echoes through the halls of politics. It holds the power to unlock the secrets of a nation's desires, and in the digital age, it is a currency that politicians can no more afford to ignore. The question of who holds the reins over data and its flow is becoming increasingly vital, as the political landscape transforms. Data is like a brush, painting the canvas of our times, adding depth and meaning to the portrait of our society. The way we gather, store, and interpret data is of utmost importance, as it shapes our reality and alters the rhythm of our lives.
