Data Stories: Examining the Inequities Impacting Students Across the Country

Picture two schools, both with the same number of students. One school has twice as many students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and 14% more multilingual learners. Yet these schools receive the same amount of funding—does that seem right??

Equal isn’t the same as equitable.? And inequitable funding is just one of many ways that school systems aren’t always set up to support students living in poverty, students with high needs, and students of color. Nationwide, these students are also:?

• Less likely to have access to high-quality and diverse teachers.?
• Less likely to have equal access to advanced coursework.?
• Less likely to engage with a curriculum that supports their unique needs or reflects their lives.?

This new, interactive resource from the Alliance for Resource Equity uses national and district data to shine light on common inequities that exist in school systems. By identifying how funding, enrollment, staffing, and scheduling trends differ from school to school, we can start to understand where we’re falling short and find opportunities for action.
