Where are We Now?:

In today's interconnected world, a new paradigm has emerged, one where data has become a powerful currency. We find ourselves at the crossroads of the digital age, a time marked by an unprecedented exchange of information. While the term"data sovereignty" may initially sound contradictory, it encapsulates the very essence of one of the greatest challenges of this era. Sovereignty can refer to different realities, "authority and power of a state to govern itself" or "authority and power to govern another state,” while slavery describes the state of a person without autonomy, forced to work and obey, directly owned and controlled by another. As individuals, we enthusiastically engage with technology, generating vast volumes of data through our daily interactions. Yet the cost and ownership of our data-driven activities is not always apparent, and it is of paramount importance that we delve into the profound implications of this digital age phenomenon.


Humans as Data Factories:

In the present era of rapid digitization, the very essence of our daily interactions with technology transforms us into active data creators and factories. It's an era where every query entered into a search engine, each “like” or reaction given on a social media post, every click on a webpage, and every online purchase made is akin to a stroke of the brush, adding intricate strokes to the ever-expanding canvas of digital data. This colossal pool of data is the lifeblood that courses through the veins of modern businesses and governments, bestowing upon them a unique and unprecedented power. It is this data, harvested from public digital engagement and activities, that equips us with the tools to decipher complex market dynamics, tailor our services and products to meet individual needs, make calculated decisions and, ultimately, foster economic growth. In essence, this same data-driven ecosystem offers us the opportunity to take on the role of co-authors in crafting the narrative of the digital age, as we collectively paint the portrait of our future with each digital interaction we undertake. The question is, will we take the opportunity to be co-authors or relinquish our rights and become modern slaves that allow? others to have sovereignty, writing the future for us?

Beneath the surface, of what may appear to be innocuous data contributions, lies a concealed and somewhat ominous underbelly. This clandestine dimension of our information-sharing practices lies hidden in the seemingly benign world of digital interactions. As active data generators, we frequently find ourselves unwittingly parting ways with control over the digital footprints we leave behind. For example, the "privacy paradox," our ubiquitous tendency to press the "accept" button on privacy notices without understanding the terms we have just actually accepted.? Sometimes we do this because it makes it easier to get what we want at the moment and sometimes we don’t have a choice. It's a surreptitious process wherein we unknowingly participate in allowing tech behemoths and data brokers to operate in the dark, veiling themselves, while accumulating our personal information without affording us the transparency and explicit consent that we rightfully deserve. This lack of control, often camouflaged by obscure messaging that capitalises on our desire for seamless convenience in our digital lives, gives rise to legitimate concerns. These concerns extend to critical matters such as personal privacy, data security, and the alarming potential for unscrupulous actors to exploit our most sensitive information for gain. This digital age, where data based on human information is one of the most valuable commodities, considered the “new oil,” beckons us to reevaluate the dynamics of data ownership and control.

The Impact on Privacy of Individuals and Society:

The age we live in places an undeniable premium on personalization. It has become a cornerstone of modern life, permeating virtually every aspect of our daily existence. The global shift from collective societies to individual-focused societies has shifted behaviors that influence our activities in the digital world. As a result, balancing between individual rights and societal needs and boundaries is an increasingly constant challenge. Behind the intricate web of tailored experiences and offerings provided us through advanced technologies, lies the driving force of our age: data. It is our data that fuels the unprecedented ability of all sectors to provide personalized products and services, adapting to our unique preferences and needs. This includes, businesses, healthcare, education, agriculture, scientific research etc.. However, this level of personalization doesn't come without substantial trade-offs, with one of the most prominent being the compromise of our personal privacy.

In this era of constant digital interaction, our every move in the online landscape leaves behind a trail of digital footprints. These footprints, seemingly innocuous, are meticulously tracked and analyzed, most often without our explicit knowledge or consent. The continuous and increasing surveillance of our digital lives raises pressing questions about the ethical use of data. Unethical uses of data that occur daily underline the urgent need for robust data protection regulations to safeguard our privacy in an increasingly interconnected world.

Even well-meaning entities collecting and analyzing our data often are unaware of the potential consequences of using personal data to grow their efficiency and effectiveness. As we navigate this intricate balance between personalization and privacy, it is essential to engage in a thoughtful discourse on the ethical implications of an increasingly data-driven society and advocate for measures that ensure our data is handled with the responsibility and transparency it deserves.


Who Owns Our Data? And…Ethical Considerations:

Navigating the intricacies of this complex digital landscape forces us to confront fundamental questions that lie at the heart of data sovereignty and data rights. Perhaps one of the most pressing inquiries pertains to the rightful ownership of the data we, as individuals, generate. Does it belong to us, the creators? Most often, not really, it belongs to entities collecting the data. Should it belong to us as individuals (and providers) whose actions and interactions bring this data into existence? How should the companies and entities that collect, process, and profit from our data have ownership?

This intense juncture in our digital evolution calls for candid and proactive discussions regarding the ethical considerations surrounding data ownership. As challenging as this may be, these discussions need to include all stakeholders affected by the potential consequences. The data we create reflects our thoughts, preferences, and behaviors, making it a direct extension of our identities. As such, the principles of privacy and autonomy should underscore our right to have a say in how this data is managed and utilized. It's time to champion the cause of greater transparency and personal control over our data, reshaping the balance of power in favor of individuals. This calls for new platforms of communication, facilitating and initiating conversations that allow us to advocate for data rights. In doing so, we open doors for a future where data sovereignty becomes a reality, empowering individuals to govern their digital identities and determine the destiny of their data.

In other words, this provides the individual with the assurance that no one can manipulate or misuse our data. However, embracing these technologies necessitates addressing user experience, legal frameworks, and ethical considerations that require ongoing education.

I do agree we need to reclaim our own data sovereignty, I will need to look into how "self-sovereign identity and data marketplaces" might work or intend to work. IP addresses, browser footprints and mobile phone geolocations can still be harvested, at least from time to time for personalisation needs, no matter what tech is used to obfuscate them. All these bad actors need is a few crumbs here and there to pinpoint who you are. But it is going to be interesting times.
