A Data Science Showcase by Cornell MSBA Students

In early May, students in the Data Science Club of the Cornell Johnson MS in Business Analytics program presented their projects to their faculty and fellow students. The winning team of Barbara Talagan and Linh Phan built a product to improve Spotify's customer experience using user-uploaded Spotify data. The second place team of Ascari Chotoosingh and Franklin Tan showed their web-based Python tool that analyzes consumers' credit card spending habits, forecasts future spending, and makes recommendations. The third place went to the team of Daylyn Mosher and Maxwell Barnes who were motivated by Wayfair and used ideas in image recognition to help furniture shopping customers build a color palette and shop for products according to the palette. The presentation awards went to two teams: Scarlett Liu, Subha Ravichandran, and Ying Song, who studied the drivers of product returns using data for an online apparel website, and Tom Lyster, who developed a method for data-driven marketing and sales projections.

Here is a list of these presentations and you can check out the presentations at this link:

The Data Science Club was founded by students in the Cornell Johnson MSBA program to strengthen their interests in data science, share knowledge, build business analytics projects, and of course show off what they could do! Over the year, the student-run club has hosted sessions on a number of topics such as Github, PowerBI, data visualization, and Forecasting. Club members have collectively worked on different ideas, they have built visualizations and product concepts using data, and they have even scraped data from the web to explore new applications.

The club serves an important purpose. It gives students a channel to practice skills by building applications on their own; it gives them a venue to explore different kinds of software tools beyond those that are taught in the classroom: and above all, it enables them to connect their classroom learning with solving real problems.

The Data Science Club Showcase was the final event of the club for the Class of 2023. Students working in teams presented the work they had done, and then winners were chosen by the class from amongst the presentations.
