Terra Seismic a company established with the mission “reduce the risk and damage of earthquakes” uses data science on environmental factors, live streaming satellite images and historical data to forecast earthquakes. In 2004 it predicted 90% of the major earthquakes including the 8.1 ‘megaquake’ that hit the Chilean Tarapaca region.

Its accuracy is high enough that insurance companies use their data to make sure every region has adequate coverage. Also traders and hedge fudge managers use them as part of their analysis to see how natural disasters affect financial markets and MNCs.
