We begin our review of recent moves in the area of data science with the news that Ponte Energy Partners in southern Germany has appointed Lorenz Haubner to lead its data science team. Munich has been Lorenz’s workplace since 2012. Initially this involved an upward path from data analyst to head of trading and data analysis for Enerstorage. More recently he’s served as data scientist and business analytics consultant at insurance group Munich Re.
Christos C. Becker becomes Head-Data Management & Advanced Analytics for Equinor in Oslo. It means he stays in the Norwegian capital after working there in data science for Telenor and Canal Digital in addition to his most recent role leading the analytics team and machine learning projects at Allente Nordic.
An innovation hub at Imperial College London hosts Lightsource Labs, part of a 50/50 joint venture with BP. The new Senior Data Scientist in its energy management systems development is Douglas Ashton . Previously Douglas was at Pure Planet, a British energy start-up once part-owned by BP, where he headed a team building data capability. That had followed five years at IT consultancy Mango Solutions in which among other things he trained and assisted companies with their first steps in data science.
Ojas Joshi is named Head of Freight Analysis by Mercuria Energy Trading in Geneva. His previous data science placements have included with CCI and Trafigura. The most recent years have found him heading freight analytics for Koch Industries.
In the Swedish city of S?dert?lje outside Stockholm, municipal renewable electricity supplier Telge Energi makes Gabrielle Lindesv?rd its Head of Data & Analytics. This brings her into the management team as the person responsible for a new analysis and value creation function uniting data engineers with business analysts and BI intelligence developers. Gabrielle had been with the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper since 2016, rising to head its data and analytics.

Newly in at Castleton Commodities International is Renato Votto as Software Developer for the EU power asset optimisation team. Until now Renato was in London for Britain’s independent energy regulator Ofgem, progressing from audit and compliance work with its pioneering financial incentive scheme on renewable heat generation to being a member of the market intelligence team in developing software directed at analysis of wholesale energy markets.
Two appointments to report for Arenko Group: the UK-based software house specialising in energy asset trading chooses Sang Young Noh for Data Scientist and Margot Stevenard for Senior Data Analyst. Before taking a PhD in mathematical biology and biophysical chemistry, Sang Young worked on data science at Agilexi in London. His most recent slot has been as a machine learning engineer on real-estate analytics with Olvin. ?Margot spent a year in a senior data analysis position at energy supplier Bulb, after seven years with investment management company Winton where she was first a researcher and then a strategy manager.

As well as welcoming Andy Rees as CEO, energy tech company Open Energi in London hires Carter B. ouley for Data Scientist. Andrew comes from sensor/analytics software provider LYTT, which like Open Energi originated from the BP Launchpad start-up accelerator. Once a blockchain economist with Tempus Energy Technology, Carter stayed with the company as a strategy analyst before leaving for data science at US online advertising tech house Simpliworks and afterwards at Peak Gen Power.

A former Open Energi head of data science, Robyn Lucas , is now at energy asset optimisation company Modo Energy in Birmingham. Her title there of Chief Analytics Officer coincides with a corporate plan to further expand the depth of analysis behind the information it provides to organisations in the energy sector. After completing a physics PhD at University College London in 2015, Robyn initially advised companies on data usage through a tech consultancy.
Rotterdam-based marine contractor Van Oord has a new Head-Data Analytics: Ronald Root , ex-Eneco where he managed the Dutch energy service provider’s AI Centre of Excellence as the lead on data analysis. He started there in 2015 as a senior data driven business developer, moving on to be a manager for data science and business innovation. This followed a nearly 4-year stint with Eneco Energy Trade as a senior information consultant. Among his other prior postings were spells with GEN (now Energy 21) energy data management and forecasting consultancy in The Netherlands and Germany.
Giacomo Andrigo becomes Senior Product Data Analyst on geo/maps for Bolt, which builds internet marketplace platforms addressing modes of mobility. Giacomo’s own move has been from Enel’s trading and energy market division in Rome after almost three years there as senior data scientist. That had followed data science in Milan for Business Integrated Partners consultancy, looking at traffic management on Italian streets.
Utility Warehouse is a UK-based multi-service utilities provider. It is also where Dan Pascoe has moved to fill a vacancy for Data Analyst. This ends more than 14 years for Dan at EDF, finishing as senior data analyst after beginning in data management in 2008.
Senior Software Engineer in energy trading at Ovo --- that’s the new job for Jack Lockyer-Stevens .?As recently as 2020 Jack was ending four years with PwC UK in data analysis and Google Professional Cloud architecture. Since then he’s been with energy software platform Kaluza, going from senior data analyst
Sujith Manaji began in data analysis while in Hyderabad for IT consultancy Wipro. A move to London with the company followed in 2013 and he’s been its senior data analyst --- until a change in 2022. Data Analyst is still Sujith’s job title, but now with UK powerhouse Centrica.
Maersk Broker in Copenhagen has appointed Ming Lang as its Head of Data & Analytics. Ming returns to the company having previously been there from 2015 for five years as Research Manager, Analytics and Modelling. In between, he had a 2-year stint with Danske Bank as a Senior Statistical Analyst.
Finally we look to the South-West of England, with Alan Harman appointed Data Insight Analyst for Chippenham-based British renewable energy supplier Good Energy. He had been Ovo’s senior data analyst after more than 12 years with energy supplier SSE, latterly fronting its management information team.
Oh.. and as we're indeed headhunters, we should also mention that we're currently representing a reputable energy trading business in the UK in its quest to appoint a Head of Data Science who can act as a bridge between its data scientists and its UK intraday traders.

2 å¹´The first challenge of data science in commodities is data: you need millions or even billions of data points to apply data science otherwise it can be done with Excel and is not big data. WhatsApp (Meta) has probably more data about commodities than any traditional commodities trader, just apply NLP models to commodities chats.
