How to Identify Your Business-Critical Data by Mikkel Dengs?e

There comes a point when a data team delivers so many solutions-be it data models, dashboards or reports- that there is a need to prioritize their efforts.

I mean not all data models or dashboard can be equally important, right? ??

In this article, Mikkel begins by listing some reasons you why you should identify your business-critical data, and what business-critical actually means. He then discusses some ways in which you can map your critical data products (he does this for data models and dashboards).

??I found this article insightful because it provides practical approaches to defining business-critical data.

Crisis to Calm: Story of Data Validation at Netflix by Lavanya Kanchanapalli

??This is a story of how bad data made Netflix go down for 45 minutes in every single country.

???This is also a story of how Netflix began their journey of bad data detection.

My main takeaways:

  • data changes are like code pushes
  • while data validation cannot be approached with the same set of techniques as what is done when working with software, we can definitely take inspiration from there
  • to build any data validation, you need to know your data (or work very closely with those who do)
