Data Privacy Day: Teaching Our Kids to Protect Their Future in the Age of AI
The amount of data we produce each year is staggering - so is the use of our data.

Data Privacy Day: Teaching Our Kids to Protect Their Future in the Age of AI

Most parents have had the moment—a child taps “Allow” on a new app without hesitation, clicking through terms they haven’t read, trading personal information for a game or a social network. We live in a world where data is currency, yet the reality is many kids (and adults) don’t fully grasp what they’re giving away.

Today, on Data Privacy Day, we’re reminded that safeguarding personal data isn’t just about compliance or avoiding scams. It’s about trust, autonomy, and ensuring our kids understand the digital trade-offs they’re making every day.

The Unseen Cost of “Free”

We teach kids to be careful with money, yet how often do we discuss the hidden costs of “free” services? Every time they search for something online, watch a video, or use a smart assistant, they’re leaving a trail—a digital footprint that can be stored, analyzed, and even misused.

Recent concerns around DeepSeek, a powerful AI search tool developed in China, highlight just how much can be inferred from our online habits. Imagine a world where a country, company, or AI system can predict your child’s future interests, financial status, or mental health—all because of patterns in their searches.

Is this the world we want them to grow up in, blindly accepting every user agreement? Or do we want them to ask questions, understand their rights, and make intentional choices?

Privacy Isn’t Just a Policy—It’s a Life Skill

We don’t wait until kids are 18 to talk about money, and we shouldn’t wait to teach them about privacy, either. Just as we guide them in learning to cross the street safely or make wise financial decisions, data privacy should be an ongoing conversation.

What does that look like in practice? It starts with curiosity—not just fear. Instead of telling kids to “be careful online,” help them think critically.

  • Why do apps ask for location access?
  • What happens when you upload a photo to a social platform?
  • How does an AI chatbot remember past conversations?

Girl Scout Troop 60879 listens intently to Google VP, Suzanne Frey, describe what happens with their digital data trail.

Intentional parents don’t just warn; they expose their kids to experts who can deepen their understanding. No matter where you live, there are companies—big and small—that are tackling privacy concerns. Set up a conversation, visit a local cybersecurity firm, or find a speaker who can share real-world insights. When our Girl Scout troop met with the VP of Security, Privacy, Compliance, and Trust at Google, the girls walked away with a new level of awareness that no amount of “don’t do that” warnings could have replaced.

Empowering the Next Generation

In the Age of AI, data privacy is part of raising informed, autonomous kids. It’s not about banning technology but about ensuring our children understand the trade-offs. They deserve to know that their information has value—and that their choices matter.

So, on this Data Privacy Day, let’s start the conversation. What’s one thing you’ve taught your kids about privacy? Or what’s a question they’ve asked that made you think differently? Let’s share insights and build a future where our kids don’t just consume technology but understand it.

A really critical point Amy Love thank you for surfacing the conversation. These technologies will be the primary way our children interface with computers in a couple of years. Understanding the data privacy risks is so important!
