Data Principles Task Group will help realise the potential of the North Sea

  • Group will boost efficiency and innovation through more accurate, consistent and reliable data?
  • Leading organisations combining data and digital to maximise North Sea business potential?
  • Further Task Groups will progress Offshore Energy Digital Strategy Group vision?

?

The Data Principles Task Group (DPTG) is preparing to hold its first meeting as it seeks to encourage better decision-making in the North Sea through the provision of reliable data.?

The aim is to support more efficient, productive business and reduced emissions, and the Group will drive the adoption of data management frameworks across the sector and look at best practice guidance.?

It is made up of 14 members from a range of organisations from oil and gas companies, Renewables, Regulators, the charity sector, academia, think tanks, the utility sector, and the supply chain each bringing their expertise and perspective to the role.?

The DPTG was set up following the publication of the Digitalising Offshore Energy Systems report in 2021 which called on the oil and gas and renewables sectors to work together to use the North Sea to its full capacity and reduce emissions to meet net zero targets.?

The Initial Task Force was run by Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) and Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult.?

It brought together the North Sea Transition Authority, Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC), Offshore Energies UK (OEUK), and a range of participants – including The Crown Estate (TCE), Crown Estate Scotland (CES), the Technology Leadership Board (TLB), and Renewable UK (RUK) – to encourage a modern, digitalised, and integrated offshore energy sector.?

It made a series of recommendations including setting up three Task Groups, the DPTG, the Common Data Toolkit Task Group, which will consider establishing a common data toolkit to facilitate controlled and automated data sharing across the sector, and the Driving Cross-Sector Digitalisation Task Group which will look at co-ordinating digitalisation efforts to enable efficient investment and capture cross-sector requirements.??

The DPTG will hold its first meeting at 11am on Wednesday 19 July.?

Chair Ed Evans, of the Open Data Institute, said:?

“Establishing principles is a critical part of ensuring that stakeholders: energy companies, regulators and members of the public, have a clear understanding of our intention and ambition.??

“As well as a key communication tool, the principles will reinforce the scope for the programme and identify some of the challenges. Effective principles will provide clear guidance to all stakeholders about what is being delivered and the impact it will have. Signing up to the principles will be a clear statement of intent. “We have built a diverse team from energy, renewables, services, regulators and the charity sector to provide input, insight and guidance. The diverse team will ensure that the principles balance ambition and challenge with practicality and will be written in plain English.”?

Nic Granger, NSTA Director of Corporate and Chair Offshore Energy Digital Strategy Group, said:?

“The offshore energy report had a clear recommendation that data principles are key to the delivery of a cohesive digital offshore energy strategy. The Offshore Energy Digital Strategy Group is pleased that the data principles task group has started to work on the delivery of these recommendations.”?
