Data is new fuel of the century. Whether it consists of customer data, intellectual property, market insights or financial information, these types of sensitive data enable the most successful businesses to thrive. Even more than before, data is enabling our first responders to take decisions during the new pandemic situation. Its no surprise, then, that securing that critical data is increasingly a strategic priority for organizations around the globe.
Given the growing number of data sources — structured, unstructured and semi-structured environments deployed on-premises and across private and public clouds — increasing governmental scrutiny, multiplying regulations and a gross scarcity of the skilled resources, organizations are always struggling to implement effective data security measures. All organizations are not in the same position in their journey to protect their critical assets and crown jewels data. There is no single one size fits all solution that will address the unique challenges that we face in the Data Security space today.
IDC’s 2020 Data Security Survey reveals that the loss of visibility and control over data assets across distributed environments continues to challenge enterprises resulting in data breaches. 26% of survey respondents indicated their organization had between 4 and 7 data breaches requiring disclosure in the last three years. Here are some more interesting facts revealed by this study;
- Protecting data across distributed environments is a rising challenge with the biggest concern at the endpoint; 64% said laptops and workstations contained the most sensitive or extremely sensitive data
- IT and IT security differ on data security objectives, strategic vendors, and approaches. Fewer organizations have a defined data security approach
- Compliance and regulatory mandates drive the Data security spend in many organizations.
So, we all accept that there is an elephant in the room. However, many do not want to talk about it or don’t even realize the real problem. Its the right time for organizations to draft next generation data security strategies to address security of data across heterogeneous and highly distributed environments.
Despite having an onward looking strategy, cybersecurity projects become either ineffective or incomplete due to lack of enough skilled resources. Experts predict that the growing gap between qualified cybersecurity professionals and unfulfilled positions will reach 1.8 million by 2022 (Frost & Sullivan 2017 Study).
