We can use this data to make our interconnected world better, but we need to be careful about how it is used.
I was once a meeting with a group of executives. We were discussing the company's data privacy policy. One of the executives said, "I don't think we need to worry about data privacy. We're a small company and we don't have anything to hide."
I told him that even small companies could be targets of data breaches. I also said to him that data privacy is essential for the company's reputation. If a company's data is breached, it can damage the company's brand and make it difficult to attract customers and investors.
The executive seemed to understand the risks. He said, "I see your point. We need to take data privacy seriously."
Data is a powerful tool, but it is important to use it responsibly. We need to be aware of the potential risks and benefits of data collection and use. We also need to make sure that we are in control of our own data.
I hope these anecdotes have given you some food for thought.

Though like many things bringing in structure is a challenging problem that is disincentivized by the incumbents, there are benefits like control and efficiency that structure can bring in. Imagine a walled garden where any produce can only go out through a single window with permissions. But it is hard to fight the chaos as many of the current behemoths like Google and Facebook learned to thrive in such an environment and changing the environment itself is very difficult unless there is some regulation driven by the government.
