For each data source, document how the data is processed, including how it is stored,
transferred, and used. Is the data shared with third parties? Is it stored on-premise or in
the cloud? This step ensures that every aspect of the data journey is accounted for.

3. Classify Data Types
Understand what types of personal data you are handling. Is it sensitive data (like health information or financial details) or more general information (such as names and emails)?GDPR places stricter requirements on sensitive data, so it’s important to classify the data properly.
4. Assign Data Owners
Every piece of data should have a designated owner responsible for ensuring its accuracy, security, and GDPR compliance. This ensures accountability at every step of the data process.
5. How Long Do You Keep The Data
Each piece of data should have a deletion date that corresponds with the useful life of that data. You should of course ensure that you have adequate procedures in place to delete data that has passed its deletion date.
6. Conduct a Risk Assessment
Once your data map is in place, conduct a risk assessment to identify areas where data breaches could occur. This includes evaluating the security measures in place for protecting data and determining whether they meet GDPR requirements.
Staying Confident in Your Compliance
Creating and maintaining a data map is an ongoing process, not a one-time task. As your business grows and adopts new technologies, your data flows will evolve. Regular audits and updates to your data map will help ensure that you remain GDPR-compliant in an ever-changing digital landscape.
