Data Management Framework in Use

Data Management Framework in Use

Several well-known data management (DM) frameworks exist. However, many data management professionals worldwide still have similar questions regarding the following:

  • The scope of data management that fits a company’s needs and resources
  • The relevant framework that meets a company’s needs
  • The integrated approach to implementing multiple data management capabilities

Several years in a row, I published the same poll question on Linked. This poll has aimed to answer the important question: “Which guidelines have companies worldwide used to implement data management?” This poll offered four answers:

1.???? DAMA-DMBOK2 (The Data Management Body of Knowledge by DAMA International)

This choice assumes that a company applies this framework without changes to implement one or more DM capabilities.

2.???? DCAM (The Data Management Capability Assessment Model by the Enterprise Data Management Council)

The underlying assumption is similar to the previous one.

3.???? DAMA-DMBOK2 or DCAM adjusted

This choice means a company adjusted one of these frameworks to their needs.

4.??? Self-developed

This option assumes that a company has developed its framework without using industry guidelines.

The figure demonstrates the latest 2024 poll results and trends in using different frameworks.

Let me briefly summarize the results:

1.???? DAMA-DMBOK2 remains the leading source.

However, the usage of DAMA-DMBOK has negative trends.

Furthermore, many respondents who chose this answer still adopted this guideline to their needs.

2.???? DCAM

DCAM has been designed as a capability assessment tool for financial institutions. It has been promoted as a data management framework for various industries in the last few years.

The usage of DCAM remains at the same level.

3.???? DAMA-DMBOK2 and DCAM adjusted

I added this answer option only two years ago. The trend repeats the trends for two first answers. Companies somewhat less use the standard guidelines.

4. Self-developed frameworks

More companies tend to develop their framework. In polls from 2021 and 2022, I combined the “adjusted” and “self-developed” in one answer option. It distorts the perception of the trends. The sum of the 3d and 4th options demonstrates that the number of companies that either adjust or develop their frameworks exceeds 40%, and the trend is positive.

In my practice, I use the “O.R.A.N.G.E.” practice-based data management framework, as demonstrated in Figure 1.

This framework is a set of methods and models that help establish a data management function or implement various (meta)data initiatives. It has several unique features compared to the existing frameworks:

  • It is universal

This framework can be used for multiple purposes, for example, establishing a business case for data quality, data lineage, or metadata initiatives, creating a data governance framework for different data architectures, establishing a data management function, etc.

  • It provides an integrated implementation approach

Data management is a complex capability with multiple sub-capabilities like data governance, enterprise architecture, metadata management, etc. These capabilities are interlinked: outputs of some of them serve as an input for others.

  • It is ready for use

This framework includes multiple templates for policies, standards, and artifacts for six core capabilities

  • It includes a maturity assessment model
