Data Insights: The Importance of Taking Breaks While Driving

Did you know that after 40 minutes of driving risk of accidents is already 2,5 times higher than if you were driving for less than 20 minutes? If we look closely at statistics presented by European Commission we will find out that 52% of road traffic fatalities occurred on rural roads. Why is it so? And more than that how can we prevent it?

There is a lot of reasons why fatal traffic accident can happen on rural roads, one of them is the simple fact that 55% of all roads in Europe are rural. Though it is obvious that infrastructure improvements that were done in past years reduce risks, those could not be fully eliminated, although there are signs of clear decline in the past decade.

The explanation for this is very obvious: most rural roads are used for long driving and are lacking the safety of motorways. Whether it's a long trip or a daily commute, extended periods of driving without breaks can significantly impact one's ability to stay focused and react quickly. Studies show that fatigue can impair judgment, decrease attention span, and increase the likelihood of drowsiness behind the wheel.

To address this issue, we at Dolphin Technologies, have conducted extensive research in collaboration with various insurance companies. According to our findings, taking breaks every two hours or after driving approximately 160km is highly recommended to combat the onset of fatigue.

When driving continuously for long periods, our cognitive abilities may decline, leading to reduced alertness and response time. Taking regular breaks allows our minds and bodies to refresh and recover, ultimately improving our overall driving performance. By adhering to the recommended break frequency, drivers can mitigate the risks associated with fatigue and substantially enhance road safety.

When it comes to road safety, every precaution counts. Understanding the recommended frequency of breaks while driving and implementing them can substantially reduce the risks associated with fatigue. By integrating technology-driven solutions and promoting awareness, we can collectively work towards an accident-free world. Remember, your safety and the safety of fellow road users are in your hands. Take regular breaks, stay vigilant, and let's make the roads a safer place for all.
