Data Governance - A mini book club

Data Governance is a critical challenge in scaling data and AI strategies. Despite its importance, industry analysts report that 80% of data governance initiatives fail. In looking for new insights, I decided to look into the latest literature on the subject.

Recently, I mentioned to a former colleague, Ely Quiroga Hobbick , that I had selected a new book to read on data governance. She said, she was also about to start a new book on data governance as well. This led us to creating a mini-book club, starting June 28 at 3:00pm Central, where we can explore these topics in depth. We’ll meet virtually once a month to share insights, lessons learned, and actionable strategies from our readings. The two books we will review are:

• Data Stewardship in Action: A roadmap to data value realization and measurable business outcomes, by PuiShing LEE
• Data Governance Handbook: A practical approach to building trust in data, by Wendy Batchelder ?

Why these two books?

Both books were written by former CDOs with deep backgrounds in data governance.

In 17 years of leading data and AI initiatives, data stewardship is an area most new initiatives struggle with, so Data Stewardship in Action caught my attention. When I seen that PuiShing Lee has been a CDO, it made the selection easy for me.

Ely picked this book. When I seen the Data Governance Handbook was written by a former CDO, I wanted to view data governance from that perspective. Once I seen the table of contents, I was all in. I'm also hoping their might be some good coffee hints in the book but we'll see.

We've filled all the slots for this first book club. We limited our book club to a maximum of 10 people to ensure everyone has ample time to speak at each get together.
