Data & Economics: Going Back to Roots

Data & Economics: Going Back to Roots

My background is in econometrics - a field where economics and statistics come together to solve problems using data. And since I started my own full-time consulting gig Analytics TX, LLC in early 2023, I have been struggling with highlighting my skills and ping-ponging between using descriptors like "Data Scientist, "Data Whisperer," etc. because the core of what I do is still data.

In the past couple of weeks though, I decided to embrace my economics roots more closely in the content I create. I hope that this slightly more nuanced combination of data analysis in the context of economics is more helpful in understanding the external environment of business for you all.

Another debate I keep having with myself is whether to continue writing my LinkedIn Posts as short sentences with spaces between each sentence or to write it in a more article-type style with short paragraphs? I switched to short sentences because of the usual complexity of the results/data analysis that I share. But I do know that it makes the post a little bit longer to scroll through.

So, I Need Your Help with Two Questions:

  1. Which title do you think is better for me to use in my profile? "Data Scientist" or "Econometrician," or "Data-led Economist" or something entirely different?
  2. Which style of writing do you prefer for my content? "Short sentence" current style or "Short Paragraph" style.

This weeks' posts have been about Housing market, AI-biases Island, Select Your Seat payments for airlines, a different take on Thanksgiving "Pi", and the proportions of workers having side hustles in the U.S. Let me present some LinkedIn Observations for this week first followed by the links to this week's articles, in case you missed any of them!

I am not including the comments to each post because the tags can create chaos for those that are tagged within newsletters. But I am incredibly grateful for every one of you that interacts with my posts, which always encourages me to keep posting daily.

I am posting a much shorter version on LinkedIn but detailed articles with calculations, descriptions, etc. are still available on my SubStack Newsletter. Please subscribe to my Free Newsletter and get Weekly Post-it Statistics in your email or daily on the Substack app.

LinkedIn Observations for This Week

I know I have shared multiple tips and have recommended creating video content on LinkedIn to increase your profile visibility. Today, I want to add one more key tip in case you are ever stuck with the dreaded "what should I write about" dilemma for your content.

The tip is that on your desktop LinkedIn page, you will see LinkedIn News on the top right corner. Those are trending topics on LinkedIn at any given time. When you are looking for inspiration on what content to create, picking a topic from there can be very helpful.

Here is a suggestion on how you can proceed with creating a meaningful, relevant post in a fairly short amount of time:

  1. Pick a story that is of interest to you out of the Top 10 stories.
  2. Read the various posts that have been collated into the story on LinkedIn.
  3. Find the angle that fits your perspective and feel free to use your AI tools (Copilot, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, etc.) to ideate how you would want to present your POV on the story.
  4. Create a short video about it or get AI help in generating an image that fits your imagination
  5. Make the post and use hashtags based on what the original LinkedIn story was using.

On a side note, many people have told me that hashtags are meaningless to use on LinkedIn. My observation, however, is that if your hashtag represents something that you do uniquely (e.g. #postistatistics is unique to my posts) or if it represents something that is trending, the hashtag is helpful because it gets embedded into the link to your post. This improves SEO for your post on both LinkedIn and beyond.

Hope this was helpful to you!! Now, onwards to the round-up of this week's posts.
