Data-driven innovation from Boat design to Racing

Data-driven innovation from Boat design to Racing

Since 2010, the entire sail-racing sport has undergone an unprecedented surge of innovation. The "old way" of racing - typically relying on human intuition to react to weather and water conditions - has been eclipsed by data-driven design and real-time analytics to build faster boats, anticipate conditions, and train better athletes. Like this Oracle Team USA prepares for winning even more challenging races, like the upcoming June 2017 race, in Bermuda.

So how does Oracle Team USA remain cutting edge? Two words: more and new. First, the boat and its sailors are outfitted with more real-time sensors for even richer data collection. There are about 1,000 sensors on the boat, 300 on the wing alone. Second, the team is augmenting quantitative data with drone footage and audio recordings for richer analysis when debriefing from practice runs. A new partnership with Intel to model fluid dynamics based on the data gathered in both aerodynamic as in hydrodynamic fields that will lead to better insights not even possible a couple of years ago.

Oracle is a pioneer in data-driven performance using sensor technology and is the best 'use case' of its own based on its racing victories. This translates to the enterprise world in finding answers on how to win the organization's 'race' and challenges. The response lays in innovation and adoption of real-time and sensor-based analytics, IoT, data warehousing, BI and data visualization.

When Oracle Team USA takes to the water in June 2017 in Bermuda, every analysis, insight, and innovation will be tested against the best teams in the world. And the world will be watching.
