Data dive: 10 trends we’re seeing on Aussie roads

Since launching our telematics app, Safe ‘n Save, for Business Use drivers in September 2023, we’ve captured a whopping 700,000 kilometres of driving data over some 17,000 hours that our customers have spent behind the wheel. That’s huge!

Using smartphone GPS, accelerometer and gyroscope, the app assesses driver behaviours, like accelerating, braking, and taking corners. Business Use customers can access real-time insights on their driving habits and can be rewarded with a discount to their monthly premium for safe driving.

The goal? By leveraging data and customer insights, we can offer customers better benefits, while helping to make our roads safer, one trip at a time. In fact, Safe ‘n Save is just one of the ways we continue to innovate insurance for today and the future.

So, with massive 16 billion data points collected thus far, we asked ROLLiN’s Technical Specialist, Geospatial Engineering, Hugh Saalmans, to break it down for us.

10 trends we’re seeing from Business Use customers using Safe ‘n Save

  1. An average Aussie trip is 11 kilometres, taking roughly 16 minutes. That’s about the same distance as driving over the Sydney Harbour Bridge 9 ? times.
  2. The average speed customers drive is 41 km/h. Less than the country’s most common city speed limit of 50 km/h.
  3. Speeding on our roads occurs 9% of the time.
  4. People are using their mobile phones while driving on 1 in 8 trips.
  5. Across the states, our Victorian customers are the least safe drivers.
  6. And our South Australian customers are the safest.
  7. The most dangerous driving happens during afternoon peak hour at around 5pm.
  8. The slowest motorway our customers drive is the Eastern Distributor in Sydney with an average speed of 37 km/h.
  9. While the slowest main roads are Sydney’s Cleveland Street with an average speed of 16 km/h and St Kilda Road in Melbourne with an average speed of 20 km/h.
