Networks face many threats!
The Data Diode counter-acts both hacking and Supply-chain attacks effectively.
Hacking is both an active and interactive process performed by humans – increasingly with high levels of expertise, motivation, and vast resources. Also, by nature, hacking is a communicative activity based on knowledge of known vulnerabilities, research of new vulnerabilities combined with a trial-and-error methodology.
All systems connected by two-way network connections are potentially vulnerable to hacking. All network connections (ethernet, wifi and similar) are two-way unless they consist of a physical Data Diode.
To hack a Data Diode, the attacker would need to be able to perform the attack from both sides, since no two-way communication is possible inside the diode.
Compromising the part of the system which is exposed to the public network will not expose the secure network.
The Data Diode is also known as Unidirectional Gateway and has as far as I know never been compromised.
In comparison a firewall can aim to enforce one-way traffic but will not be more secure than the quality of the software running on the firewall.
Hardware Data Diode: Since software is always prone to human errors, the Data Diode enforces the one-way traffic by hardware.
