Data Democratization[Series#2: I am Data!]

We all have heard about Data Driven Organization concept, so here is how it’s done. Data Democratization will make it happen.

‘Data Democratization is the foundation for Data Self-Service Environment.’

Data Democratization/ Data Self-Service is not a tool, nor it’s a technology. It’s about working behavior of everyone within organization with respect to data. Traditionally, whenever we need data we go to IT and ask some reports or dashboards. We normally tell them, this is our KPI, in other words, we tell them in simple English e.g., we need sales reports about a product from a particular region. Now, its IT’s job to find out where relevant data is residing, it’s their job to extract, process and prepare data for business users in shape of a report or a dashboard. The worrying part is e.g., after IT takes 3 months to prepare a dashboard for Business User and when user says, please include 1 more column ??, now the whole exercise starts from scratch. Data Democratization fills this gap.

Data Democratization bring each employee of organization near to data and make the environment data friendly for everyone. When we commit for Data Driven Organization then we can’t run away from the difficult job of Organization’s Cultural Change.

‘Data Driven Organization dream cannot be achieved without Organization’s Cultural Change.’

Data Democratization enable everyone in the organization to be talk, walk, swim, eat and drink in data ??. Aim is to remove fear factor about data. Aim is to allow everyone ask analytical question. Aim is to have data access availability for everyone. Aim is to allow everyone to raise question about data and then suggest resolutions, if required.

This shift also requires user friendly tools and technology to serve the purpose. To achieve that low code or no code tools can be introduced, trainings can be planned etc.

In nutshell, aim of Data Democratization is to mature every employee to take decisions based on data rather based on gut feel.

I researched data democratization: I believe it needs a balanced approach. To manage the data democratization, you need the following items 1. data literacy, no one make incomplete or wrong analysis 2. Firm control of information leakage 3. Understand the sensitive information and build the matrix of usage or access We all love to have more and more information, and the real challenge is whom to protect. Being compliant with regulatory and local bodies is also a challenge in data democratization.

So a word of warning, data democratisation without data governance and guiderails is the path to data chaos. The effort to build out reports and dashboards by an enabled data community is only valuable if they are accessing the correct data, for the correct purpose, at the right time and can use it with trust.....
