The data center is reinventing itself with and for AI
They want to make the data center an example of eco-efficiency to build resilient and more sustainable infrastructure.
At the beginning of April in Paris, customers of the Schneider Electric ecosystem were invited to discover several recent innovations to build greener, less energy-consuming buildings, improve the efficiency of data centers, connected residences and industrial sites.
The European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which came into force on 1 January 2024, ?concerns listed companies, setting new standards and obligations for non-financial reporting. With new risk reporting based on ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) data, data center operators must be able to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and the implementation of best practices to deliver highly available services responsibly.
Until now, Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) has been the primary indicator of data center efficiency. While this index has contributed to improving the efficiency of buildings, it remains very imprecise about its optimization possibilities and does not take into account the primary cause of data center energy consumption, namely the consumption of hosted IT equipment.
Specific measurements are therefore expected regarding the use of IT equipment (ITEUsv) and the energy efficiency of IT equipment (ITEEsv), in order to distinguish potential gains in efficiency and sustainability. In the current context of the emergence of energy-intensive Artificial Intelligence treatments, technological cooperation is necessary to establish new reference designs, following the example of the initiatives of the Open Compute Project Foundation.

An expected impact in all industries
"Rack densification must be accompanied by innovations in materials, server cooling, and CPU performance improvements through virtualisation and micro services. The green benefits appear from 70% CPU and GPU utilisation, but not below," says Francois Tournesac , co-founder of Impleon, an expert in decarbonisation, and head of the French OCP (Open Compute Project) community.
