THE DATA ARCHITECT IN THE ORGANIZATION

THE DATA ARCHITECT IN THE ORGANIZATION

THE DATA ARCHITECT IN THE CORPORATION

(Part 4 of 4)

By W H Inmon

The placement of the data architect function in the organization is problematic. There are a lot of factors determining where the office of the data architect should be placed. Some of these factors are –

?? The size of the organization

?? How much and what kind of analytic processing is done.

?? The status and condition of the foundation of data.

?? The experience level of the data architect.

?? And so forth.

To that end there is no single place the office of the data architect should be placed. It just depends on the organization and the data architect.

What can be stated is where the data architect should not be placed. The data architect is not a dba – data base administrator. The data architect is not an application programmer. The data architect is not an end user. The data architect is not a data administrator. (In many ways the data administrator has grown into the role of the data architect.)

It would be a mistake to place the data architect in any of those organizations.

The data architect wears many hats and has a panoply of skills. The data architect must –

?? Understand technology.

?? Have the vision to work with the data model.

?? Have interpersonal skills. Users interact with the data architect every day.

?? Have the patience and skill to unravel large knots. The foundation of data that the data architect works with is unwieldy, to say the least.

?? The ability to evaluate new technology before it is unveiled to the corporation.

?? The ability to communicate effectively with management and to articulate the issues that arise.

?? The ability to resolve and/or mitigate technical issues when they arrive.

?? The ability to direct new developments in a positive direction.

As you can see this list is a comprehensive and very diverse list.

In most organizations the data architect probably fits in the office of the CDO or the CIO. But even then this depends on the organization and the data architect.

Bill Inmon lives in Denver with his wife and his two Scotty dogs – Jeb and Lena. Jeb is definitely food motivated while Lena is probably more affection oriented. Lena likes to lie on her back and have her belly scratched. Jeb likes his dogfood and treats.

How many data architects are filling the DBA role? In my lifetime, most dba's called themselves data architects, but few considered much technology outside of the database. Bill Inmon - it makes sense that those roles should not be intermixed.??

Key one which I have learned over a period of time: "Have the patience and skill to unravel large knots. The foundation of data that the data architect works with is unwieldy, to say the least"

Great insight on Data Architect’s role in the organisation. What is your take on Information Architects in the context of data domains? Should they be a separate role from the Data Architects?
