Darlia: A Feature Story of Shalom Adewale’s Writing Journey

Darlia: A Feature Story of Shalom Adewale’s Writing Journey

“Writing runs in my family’s blood and so my biggest inspiration is my Dad!

His books are golden treasures.

But growing up wasn’t easy especially when it came to the point whereby I had to express myself publicly.

My solace of self-expression was writing down my thoughts. Somehow, the pen had its way of helping me bring out those beautiful thoughts of fantasy, putting light into them and transforming them into words of reality.

My heartfelt thoughts and personal experiences found their way to reaching the minds of amazing personalities through the wonderful, and fantastic art of writing.

At age 15, a young teenager that I was, I could already feel the irresistible urge to express myself more by using a pen. Writing found its way to my heart.

And, I certainly wasn’t ready to let go of it anytime soon,

not today, nor tomorrow, nor ever.

My mum was also an amazing source of encouragement to me. At a very young age, her deep concern for me to tell someone there who reads my story, about my victory notes and personal experiences, made me think beyond the stars and embrace the beautiful creative power of writing.

So, you won’t be wrong to conclude that my parents encouraged my writing career big time.

But I had my fears. One such was that no one may care to listen to whatever I had penned down.

I mean, who cares?

What does this young teenager have to share with whoever cared to have a glance through her written piece?

I’m not even in the spotlight, neither am I an expert, or the most loved writer in the whole globe.

These fears tore my heart into a trillion pieces. It was that bad!

As a beginner/newbie writer then, all I could think of was that I wasn’t perfect to gain the attention or spotlight that I saw writing experts getting.

I was my critic.

But one thing I never did was to beat myself into a pulp.

Rather, I decided to improve better on my writing skills.

I decided to take one step at a time, one step each day,

and that one step that always counts

no matter how little it was.

Another big fear that hit me so hard, was not being able to pay for writing courses that I badly needed. It was so tough. But I didn’t feel defeated by this challenge.

Rather, I researched more on courses that I could afford and I got started with those.

If there’s one mistake that I would never want to resurface is the “Perfectionist syndrome”. You end up doing little or nothing because you want everything to be 100% perfect, otherwise, nothing else counts.

My advice for that beginner writer is please treasure and value quality over quantity when writing.

Get these:

*Keep writing.

*Quality counts more.

*Be a curious reader.

*Review your writings.

*Take affordable writing courses.

*Politely ask for feedback, as this will help you improve better.

*Build relationships with fellow writers in your niche of expertise.

*Always check for choice of words, pronunciations, spelling, and grammar.

*Avoid procrastination. Write down the idea that comes to mind. Grab a note/book and jot down. Don’t wait for later.

Back to my story, I kept improving my writing and in the year 2022, I wrote and got my first book published. It’s titled You’ve got to do it yourself.

I was so thrilled.

People globally bought my book and it’s still on sale even as I write this story of mine. The sweetest part of it is that I have another book that will soon be launched. I’m so excited.

The name “Darlia” brings so many beautiful memories to mind. All of it is connected to my writing journey. I guess that will be a story for another day.

This is me also encouraging beginner writers out there, that they shouldn’t give up on crushing their writing goals. And, so I’m working hand in hand with Blessing and my teammates to make the beautiful dream of making prolific writers out of beginner writers.

You’ve read this far. You do love my story.

Thanks so much. Here’s my special gift to you.

Get started crushing your writing goals.

I'm still Shalom Adewale also known as Darlia, your favorite author.”
