THE DARK SIDE OF GLAMPING in the Aconcagua, Argentina
I recently wrote about the pluses of glamping...I now must talk about the exact opposite...and the endless suffering of equines.
Glamping is a type of tourism in which the classic camping tent experience is greatly improved up until luxurious accommodations are available for people who want to be closest to nature.
In the case of alpinist tourists -mostly North American & European- travelling to and seeking to summit of Aconcagua, these luxurious practices are only possible by literally breaking the backs and legs of hundreds of mules, with intense suffering routinely involved that ultimately results in the cruel death of countless of these miserable animal-slaves, and all for the pleasure of each of indifferent tourists.
The fight to avoid current cruel practices and for the well-being of these mules in the so-called blood traction business has been going on for decades, and many of us have tried different approaches with the animal owners, and local authorities. The difference between this cruel slavery and responsible animal welfare is ultimately too, in the hands of the same tourists who exploit them non-stop.
There is a children's story about a bad wolf -which in this case represents indifference, cruelty and violence- and a good wolf -kindness, empathy, respect- that coexist in each of us and that are always in a perennial struggle to impose and manifest themselves... the lesson is that the wolf that prospers will be the one we feed...
We must be vigilant so that the dark side of humanity -our own humanity-, does not prevail, and if for just one more adventure and personal pleasure other beings have to suffer and die as if they were worthless, something has to change ASAP.
The systematic sadism of this practice on the Aconcagua mules gets compounded by the total indifference and complicity of their mountaineer clients who want to visit the summit in maximum comfort has been going on for too long...and cannot continue any longer!

Both suppliers and customers are complicit in this brutality, and if they don't stop it, someone has to!
Help the Cuyunche Foundation's campaign for an end to these cruel practices, and put an end to this right now by signing the petition!
