Artificial Intelligence (AI) is often hailed as the harbinger of a new era, promising unparalleled advancements and efficiencies across all sectors. Yet, lurking beneath its glossy veneer is a disturbing reality:

If left unchecked, AI technologies can perpetuate and even exacerbate societal biases, leading to greater inequality and exclusion. Despite the utopian visions of a tech-driven future, the rush to deploy AI systems has frequently sidelined critical ethical considerations, resulting in tools that can undermine the very fabric of diversity and inclusion.

Understanding Ethical AI

Ethical AI refers to the development and deployment of AI systems in ways that adhere to ethical principles and values. These principles include fairness, transparency, accountability, privacy, and the avoidance of harm. Ethical AI aims to ensure that AI technologies respect human rights, promote social good, and mitigate biases and injustices.

Key Ethical Principles in AI

Fairness: AI systems should be designed to treat all individuals equitably and without bias. This means avoiding discrimination based on race, gender, age, socioeconomic status, or other characteristics.

Transparency: The decision-making processes of AI systems should be understandable and accessible to users. Transparency helps build trust and allows for accountability.

Accountability: Developers and deployers of AI systems should be responsible for their actions and the impacts of their technologies. Mechanisms should be in place to address and rectify any negative consequences.

Privacy: AI systems should respect individuals' privacy rights and handle personal data responsibly, ensuring data security and informed consent.

Avoidance of Harm: AI technologies should be designed to minimize harm to individuals and society, including physical, psychological, and social harm.

Why The Urgency?

1. The ethics council co-chaired by OpenAI’s CEO has yet to launch.

The council was not meant to provide a legal framework around AI, but rather to provide some ethical guidelines for the burgeoning technology, however, 6 months later it’s yet to appear.

OpenAI has faced recent controversies. Safety-minded employees have left the company due to multiple controversies, Vox reported in May 2024. Public backlash also occurred when actress Scarlett Johansson accused the company of copying her voice for ChatGPT, despite her refusing the company’s licensing request, which OpenAI denied.

2.???? Medical Misinformation

?

Worldwide, users search Google with health queries 70,000 times per minute.


Gemini, for example, can produce inaccurate and potentially harmful information related to health. A widely shared result from Gemini was “Doctors recommend smoking 2-3 cigarettes per day while pregnant.”

As AI products are implemented by both large commercial and smaller-scale developers, they also, however, have the potential to make the problem of medical misinformation worse and cause real-world harm to individuals.

3.???? Human Rights

When Clearview AI, a US-based company, experienced a massive privacy breach, they had amassed a facial recognition database with over 3 billion photos. These photos were scraped from social media and other platforms without obtaining permission. This database was then sold to law enforcement agencies and some private entities, sparking monumental concerns over privacy and resulting in multiple lawsuits.

To ensure ethical data collection, it is crucial that the data is diverse and representative of all groups, especially those that are underrepresented.


If the dataset lacks balance, synthetic data can be used to address this issue. Bias metrics such as disparate impact, equal opportunity difference, and demographic parity should be integrated into every AI system to maintain ethical standards.

A survey by Tidio found that nearly 69% of graduates fear that AI could take their jobs or make them irrelevant within a few years.


This level of concern highlights a corporate responsibility need, to ensure AI does not push people into poverty or make their lives difficult.

Every company has a responsibility to use AI ethically. Consequently, many companies are appointing leaders to oversee AI technology. Some consumer-packaged goods (CPG) companies that have taken this step include Unilever, PepsiCo, Johnson & Johnson, Coca-Cola, L'Oréal, and Kimberly-Clark. Employers also have a responsibility to support their teams with training and awareness and to promote ethical AI practices across their organisations.

In our 'post-truth' world, AI technologies pose significant challenges to distinguishing reality from fiction. Deep fake images and videos can convincingly fabricate events or place people in scenarios that never occurred, undermining trust in visual evidence.


In the realm of intellectual property, AI-generated music and art blur the lines of ownership and creativity, raising questions about originality and authorship.

AI can manipulate recordings to put words into the mouths of current and historical figures, distorting their messages and rewriting history. These advancements complicate our perception of truth, demanding new ethical standards and vigilance in our consumption of information.

What Can We Do?

Regulatory Frameworks

Regulatory frameworks establish the legal and ethical standards for AI development and deployment. These frameworks can include laws, regulations, and guidelines that define acceptable practices and set boundaries for AI technologies. For example, the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) includes provisions that address data protection and privacy in the context of AI, ensuring that individuals' rights are safeguarded.

Standards and Certifications

Standards and certifications provide benchmarks for ethical AI practices. Organisations in Australia can adhere to established standards, such as those developed by Standards Australia (SA), to demonstrate their commitment to ethical principles.


For example, the AS ISO/IEC 27001:2015 standard addresses information security management, which protects data privacy in AI systems. Additionally, the Australian Government's AI Ethics Principles offer guidelines for responsible AI development. Certifications based on these standards can serve as a form of accountability, signalling to consumers and stakeholders that an AI system meets specific ethical criteria.

Policymakers can incentivise research and development in ethical AI through funding and support for projects that prioritise ethical considerations. Grants, tax incentives, and public-private partnerships can encourage innovation that aligns with ethical values. The issue with AI data quality tools is on their high bias when detecting something wrong in the databases. Since GenAI tools can not be measured by a metric atm, they are still on their initial way to reach the target however future will be bright by GenAI tools in order to detect issues for DQ checks.
