In 1987, two 12-year-olds, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, met in a secondary school in Paris. They became great friends and started their first band, Darlin', at the age of 17 due to their similar musical inclinations. Daft Punk was founded later, when Bangalter and Homem-Christo experimented with drum machines and synths.

Daft Punk went to a party in EuroDisney in September 1993, and the demo tape handed to Macmillan there became the foundation for Daft Punk's breakthrough track, "The New Wave."

Daft Punk's first number-one single in the United States occurred as a result of their hugely successful collaboration with Canadian R&B artist The Weeknd, who released a song called "Starboy" that included Daft Punk. The song went on to become the first single to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Daft Punk's net worth has been estimated at $140 million, based on sales of over 12 million albums.
