Daring Greatly!

As Theodore Roosevelt observed - It is NEVER the critic who counts!

The one who truly counts is the woman in the Arena who dared greatly!

They inspire us to take on challenges and adversity and flip it around on its head to innovate, create, solve and transform – to make a part of the world we found to be less than perfect and make it better than we found it.

Over the last few months we have learned so much from Ellyn Herbert, CPC, PCC ’s guests. We have seen what the Intersection of Purpose and Passion can ignite - and when followed with Perseverance the impact and outcome that emerge.

So when Ellyn Herbert, CPC, PCC invited me back on the show to reflect on the distance and journey between a Defining Moment and Daring Greatly, I wanted to take the opportunity to share some key learnings and strategies around coping and overcoming the critics.

Looking back at the stories as shared by the guests on the show and overlaying that with my personal journey though Entrepreneurship, Philanthropy and Corporate America – I wanted to share some common patterns of challenges and strategies to overcome them?

  • Cadence of Change – it doesn’t have to be super-fast for it to be super powerful – Everyone has their own rhythm, and great things take time. Don’t worry, if it feels like things are not moving fast enough – as long as you are not standing still
  • ?Fear comes in various shapes and sizes – the unknown is scary but the known garden variety of Criticism and Judgment is worse. Participating in any form of dialogue with the Critic is counterproductive. As a leader, the goal is in the transformation, not winning a popularity contest.
  • ?Leadership traits that come in very handy when Daring Greatly are Influence, Agility and ability to continuously Execute. Use the influence to bring along those who can amplify the benefits of the change, not so much the critics. Leverage Agility to fail fast, learn and improve. And finally, keep moving, keep iterating – the solution will get better, change embraced at scale
