Dare to try something new. Always!

A couple of days ago I had a short car trip with my oldest daughter. It’s always such an amazing opportunity to understand how the world is seen through the shining eyes of a bright and sweet 11 y.o. girl!

We listened to music, we spoke about friendship, photography, COVID, social networks, ... pretty much everything that popped up on her mind during those 20 mins.

One of the things that captured a lot her attention was our conversation around the power of curiosity and forward movement. Forcing ourselves to purposefully follow our natural curiosity and learn while exploring new areas, new domains. We ended up making the connection between this and the risk of making false assumptions and deciding something before digging deeper and understanding the “real thing”.

In fact, so many times we immediately jump into a solution before exploring new pathways, saying (or thinking) something like “it’s impossible”, “I can’t do it”, “we’ve tried it before and doesn’t work” or “I already know how it is”. On the opposite side, every time we allow ourselves to do what children naturally do, to follow our curiosity and explore, ask questions, try-fail-try again, we ALWAYS learn a lot and never stop surprising ourselves.

And this is valid for everything! From science, to sports, to cooking and to soft(er) skills.

The drawing I’m sharing here has been made by my daughter after seeing a YouTube tutorial. Her initial reaction when watching the video was “WOW... that’s impossible! This guy is a professional!!!!”...

I believe you can figure out the rest of the story ;)

Thank you Ana! Great reflection points! Although we all feel the same regarding time, I think we are also using it a lot as an “excuse”. What would you do if you have 2 additional hours in your day? Most probably we would end up filling them with “typical stuff” instead of “curiosity driven stuff”, right? I keep going back to Peter Drucker’s quote: “Do first things first and second things not at all.” At the end of the day, everything is a prioritization exercise, and we need to put our “big rocks” first :)

In my opinion, this has an important impact on education. Kids should be given time to struggle with problems and figure out solutions, i.e. active learning, before they are lectured textbook answers! That’s how we’ve come to learn and make discoveries since the dawn of humanity! We should find ways to inspire people, young or old, to making room to imagination and have the chance to explore their own ideas! “Exploration is in our nature. We began as wanderers, and we are wanderers still.” Carl Sagan

Hi Ricardo, Thanks for bringing in such an interesting topic and for sharing your personal story! As you and others said, curiosity is an amazing natural commodity built in our human brains (and the brains of other animals too!). While this capacity endows us with immense potential, how many of us have the time and opportunity to, every time an idea pops up, follow up on that, explore it in more depth, and really learn something out of it? It is discouraging to see how shortage of time is creating a serious obstacle to human curiosity in western societies. Think about our daily lives. After the excitement of finding something new, or coming up with a new question, what lasts beyond that initial thrill? Many of us don’t even have time to write down or sketch their thoughts. As you know, great ideas do not usually show up as an “Eureka” moment. They are crafted over the years, in a chain laid down mostly by ordinary people who dared to make way for their own ideas, and who had the time and perseverance to explore them to their fullest, even if they'd never been able put them into practice or witness how profoundly their ideas have changed the world.
