Fairness in the workplace isn’t just about treating everyone equally and fairly – it’s also about creating an environment where everyone can thrive by having access to the same opportunities and rewards. However, many employers are hesitant to embrace fairness in the workplace because they fear that it could open them up to risks or liability.

Whilst equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities, equity goes a step further and recognises that we all have different circumstances and as such allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to ensure an equal and fair outcome can be achieved.

Workplace fairness is built on the principle of equity. This principle extends to both employees and employers. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity, and no one should be unfairly discriminated against. It’s about creating a level playing field in which employees are given the same opportunities to succeed.

When workplace fairness is practiced, it fosters a positive working environment in which employees feel valued and motivated. However, achieving workplace fairness can be challenging. There are often different perspectives on what fairness looks like, and there can be conflict over what's fair vs. what's not. But ultimately, workplace fairness is worth striving for because it creates a more positive, productive, and inclusive work environment for everyone involved.


The benefits of a fair workplace

When it comes to the workplace, we often think of fairness as something that should be strived for, but seldom achieved. After all, there are always going to be some employees who feel they are being treated unfairly, and there will always be conflicts and power struggles. However, fairness in the workplace is actually a very important goal to strive for. Not only is it the right thing to do, but studies have shown that fair workplaces are more productive and have lower levels of turnover.

There are many benefits to creating a fair workplace, even though it may seem like a risky undertaking. For one, employees who feel like they are being treated fairly are more likely to be more engaged in their work. Of course, as I mentioned, fairness is not always easy to achieve. There will always be some level of inequality in any work environment and there will always be disputes over what is fair. However, if we can learn to treat each other with respect and try to see things from others' perspectives, we can create workplaces that are much fairer for everyone involved.


How to create a fair workplace

When it comes to creating a fair workplace, there are a few key things to keep in mind.

  • Equal opportunities: All employees should be treated equally and with respect. This includes things like providing the same opportunities for advancement and keeping communication open between management and staff.
  • Fair remuneration: Pay should be based on skillset and experience level – not on factors like gender or race.
  • Open communication: Keep communication open between management and staff and create a system of accountability so that employees feel comfortable coming forward with concerns or issues without fear of retaliation. In addition, provide opportunities for employees to provide input and feedback when establishing ways to create a fair and unbiased workplace environment.
  • Access to resources: Ensure that all employees have access to the same resources and support, regardless of their position or seniority in the company.
  • Diversity & inclusion policies: Establish policies that promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace, such as anti-discrimination policies, equal opportunity hiring practices, and family-friendly benefits/ programmes. Remember to monitor workplace dynamics to ensure fairness and equity are maintained.
  • Educate and inform: Provide opportunities for employees to understand what an inclusive culture looks like and encourage collaboration and mutual respect among teams.
