DAOs Level the Playing Field

DAOs Level the Playing Field

Remote work that's inclusive by default.

DAOs are a new and novel concept born out of the blockchain technology and cryptocurrency communities. For myself (Csill), I believe DAOs and the work opportunities they provide are an evolution to the way people work that levels the playing field globally. While this new paradigm is exciting, it is important that we preserve the inclusive benefits DAOs offer.

As decentralized working platforms most DAOs focus on a single goal or support a specific project. Participants of the DAO are able to collaborate and creatively perform work that other DAO members have identified as worthwhile. Participants are usually rewarded for their contributions and this method of “crowdsourcing” labor has led to many different DAOs springing up that are focused on a wide variety of missions and causes.?

DAOs can also be not-for-profit or for-profit organizations. The work is done on a first come first serve basis and allows people to work around other commitments. Most DAOs are powered exclusively by remote work for now, but in the future I fully expect hybrid models to emerge as "traditional" companies feel the pressure from their employees to provide a more balanced work experience.

DAOs are on Regulator’s Radar

So why are we talking about DAOs? Well, recently I saw a discussion on crypto twitter where an attorney had asked about minimum wage and if any DAOs had gotten into trouble by not honoring it. With the global trend in developed countries being very pro minimum wage I found it concerning that people in leadership positions within the DAO ecosystem seemed to think there was no point in resisting regulators on this issue. My takeaway was that regulators will likely classify DAO work as employment and require DAOs to bear the responsibilities of being an employer.

Don’t get me wrong, some aspects of the DAO will definitely require a light form of structure and global regulation to ensure predictability, such as payroll, tax forms and other things related to self-employment via DAO.?However, I strongly believe that employment legislation regarding DAOs would increase the burden on both the DAO founders as well as participating members by introducing bureaucratic requirements that are outdated, unnecessary and highly discriminatory.

DAOs are an entirely new way of performing work, contributing to projects and, as such, the regulators need an entirely new way to regulate them. Trying to force a square peg into a round hole almost always leads to more harm than good. My hope is that regulators and law makers will educate themselves about DAOs and put the work in to preserve the many awesome benefits that DAOs offer.

If this work is not done by those in power the HR process of ensuring compliance with employment legislation will automatically exclude a number of talented individuals from contributing to DAOs. This could be simply based on their bad luck of being born in the wrong country, a lack of access to identity documents or a criminal record that prevents a second chance after serving time in prison, perpetuating recidivism.

By limiting the labor pool for DAOs the direct effect is “dumbing down” the entire ecosystem and preventing the most capable people from doing their best work.?I believe that some DAOs will be bigger than todays Fortune 500 companies and by handicapping them in this way a large amount of economic productivity will be lost.

An Open Source Solution

The way that the open source communities maintain code and software is the best template for how DAO systems should work. The basic premise is that there is a community of pseudo-anonymous people from all over the world that come together around a common goal.

For those of you who were early adopters of cryptocurrency and Bitcoin this model should feel familiar. Even if you aren’t an OG though, the fact that most Web3 projects today use this open source contributor method proves that it works and is sustainable at a global scale.

Even a single mother with no documentation who has 3 children can earn a living in an area of the world where physical job opportunities are limited. This access to digital work empowers the DAO’s members and helps the economic development of the places they reside.?

I see the expansion of this open-to-everyone remote work as the next evolution of employment.

Preserving Equal Access to Employment

Something is fundamentally wrong about different people in the same geographic region having different bundles of privileges. In today's world people don’t enjoy the same freedom of movement the way that capital does. Restricting voluntary work engagements on the basis of class, race, religion, and national origin violates the ethical principle of our common right to life on this planet.

As of the end of 2021, FAIR estimates that approximately 15.5 million illegal aliens reside within the United States. Most of these people did not want to migrate. Many of them would rather live close to their families and friends. The majority of these immigrants were forced by economic or political conditions to migrate.

How amazing would it be if, instead of having to leave everything behind, people with access to the internet could fire up their computer and earn a living without having to uproot their entire life? Additionally, some economists suggest that gross world product could be doubled by allowing free global labor mobility.

With all of these awesome benefits #DAOs are something that need to be protected. Smart regulation that preserves the level playing field for global employment is a must and if we do this I truly believe our world will be a better place.
