DAO & DIGITAL SOCIALISM
CHAPTER 4.
WHAT STARTED FIRST DIGITAL CAPITALISM OR DIGITAL NEO-FEUDALISM OR BOTH ARE SIMULTANEOUS IN TANDEM
?These two terms, digital capitalism and digital neo-feudalism, aren't typically described in a sequential manner but instead represent different perspectives or theories about the same set of phenomena. These theories attempt to characterize the economic and social changes resulting from the rise of digital technologies and the internet, which have been rapidly developing in tandem over the last several decades.
That said, the term 'digital capitalism' tends to be used more broadly and has a longer history of usage, as it is a natural extension of discussions about the role of capitalism in the digital age. Digital capitalism describes the economic system where digital technologies and networks become the dominant means of production and distribution. The rise of major tech companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon is often cited as a manifestation of digital capitalism.
The term 'digital neo-feudalism', on the other hand, is a more recent development and represents a specific critique or interpretation of the current digital economic system. The neo-feudalism lens views the economic landscape as becoming increasingly stratified and controlled by a handful of tech 'lords' who control significant digital resources, with most users in a subservient role.
Thus, it's not so much a matter of one starting before the other. Instead, they are two perspectives on the same ongoing development, with the concept of digital neo-feudalism emerging as a critique or reinterpretation of the systems and structures described by digital capitalism.
Digital capitalism and digital neo-feudalism are two sides of the same coin. Digital capitalism is the economic system that has emerged in the digital age, while digital neo-feudalism is the social and political system that is emerging in tandem with it.
?Digital capitalism is characterized by the rise of big data, the increasing concentration of power in the tech industry, and the growing importance of digital technologies in all aspects of our lives. This has led to a new form of inequality, in which a small number of wealthy and powerful individuals and groups control the vast majority of resources.
?Digital neo-feudalism is the social and political system that is emerging in tandem with digital capitalism. In this system, a small number of wealthy and powerful individuals and groups control the vast majority of resources, including data, technology, and infrastructure. This concentration of power has led to a number of negative consequences, including increased inequality, decreased privacy, and a decline in democracy.
It is difficult to say definitively which started first, digital capitalism or digital neo-feudalism. It is likely that they emerged simultaneously and are mutually reinforcing. Digital capitalism has created the conditions for digital neo-feudalism, while digital neo-feudalism has helped to perpetuate digital capitalism.
The growth of digital capitalism and digital neo-feudalism is a serious threat to our society. We need to take steps to address this problem before it is too late.
Shoshana Zuboff's book "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism" (2019) discusses the extraction of personal data for economic gain, which is central to digital capitalism.
Similarly, Evgeny Morozov's "To Save Everything, Click Here" (2013) critiques the overreliance on technology solutions and the power of tech companies, reflecting concerns related to digital neo-feudalism.
Another book worth mentioning is "The System: Who Owns the Internet, and How It Owns Us" (2020) by James Ball, which discusses the concentration of digital power in the hands of a few tech giants, another key concern in discussions of digital neo-feudalism.
There are some other writers and their books that discuss digital capitalism and digital neo-feudalism. These books provide a more in-depth look at the negative consequences of digital capitalism and digital neo-feudalism. They argue that these systems are leading to increased inequality, decreased privacy, and a decline in democracy. They also offer some suggestions for how we can address these problems.
It is important to note that there are also some writers who argue that digital capitalism and digital neo-feudalism are not necessarily bad things. They argue that these systems can lead to innovation, economic growth, and a more efficient use of resources. However, they also acknowledge that these systems can have negative consequences, and they argue that we need to be careful to mitigate these problems.
Ultimately, the question of whether digital capitalism and digital neo-feudalism are good or bad is a complex one. There are both positive and negative aspects to these systems. It is important to be aware of both the benefits and the risks so that we can make informed decisions about how to shape the future of our society.

Historically feudalism was succeeded by capitalism
Yes, historically, feudalism was succeeded by capitalism as the dominant socioeconomic system in many parts of the world. Feudalism was a social and economic system that developed in medieval Europe, characterized by a hierarchical structure where land was owned by the nobility, and labor was provided by peasants in exchange for protection and the right to work the land. Capitalism, on the other hand, emerged with the rise of industrialization and the transition from an agrarian to an industrial society.
Capitalism is an economic system based on private ownership of the means of production, profit-making through market competition, and the accumulation of capital. It is characterized by free markets, wage labor, and the pursuit of individual self-interest. Capitalism brought significant changes to the organization of society, such as the growth of urban centres, the rise of the bourgeoisie (capitalist class), and the shift from agrarian economies to industrial production.
It's important to note that the transition from feudalism to capitalism was a complex and gradual process that occurred over many centuries and varied across different regions. It involved numerous factors, including technological advancements, changes in agricultural practices, urbanization, and shifts in political power. The Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries played a significant role in accelerating the transition to capitalism by transforming production methods and fostering economic growth.
While feudalism was succeeded by capitalism as the dominant socioeconomic system, it is worth noting that remnants of feudalistic structures and practices may still exist in some societies, and the effects of capitalism have also given rise to various critiques and alternative socioeconomic models.
SOCIO-ECONOMIC ORGANIZATION VIS-A-VIS CONTROL OF MEANS OF PRODUCTION/CAPITAL-CREATION
Yes, historically feudalism was succeeded by capitalism. Feudalism was a system of social and economic organization in which land was owned by a small number of nobles and worked by a large number of peasants who were bound to the land. Capitalism is a system of economic organization in which the means of production are privately owned and operated for profit.
The transition from feudalism to capitalism was a gradual process that took place over several centuries. It was driven by a number of factors, including the rise of the merchant class, the development of new technologies, and the growth of trade.
The merchant class, or bourgeoisie, emerged in the late Middle Ages as a group of people who made their living by buying and selling goods. The bourgeoisie was not bound to the land like the peasants, and they had more economic freedom. They were also more educated and had more access to information.
The development of new technologies, such as the printing press and the compass, also played a role in the transition from feudalism to capitalism. The printing press made it possible to mass-produce books and other printed materials, which helped to spread new ideas and information. The compass made it possible for merchants to travel long distances and trade with new people.
The growth of trade also contributed to the transition from feudalism to capitalism. As trade increased, so did the demand for goods and services. This led to the development of new industries and businesses, which created new jobs and opportunities for people.
The transition from feudalism to capitalism was a complex process with a variety of causes and effects. It was a time of great change and upheaval, but it also led to the development of a new economic system that has been the dominant form of economic organization for centuries.
