THIS WEEK’S WINE REVIEW:
?Friday, August 11, 2023:?This week is about Syrah. Despite a considerable misuse of the name, to me Syrah is the nomenclature that should be used for Shiraz wines from cooler regions or sites. So from my perspective Shiraz is a bigger, bolder wine from warm to very warm wine regions, whereas the same variety made into wine in a cooler region should be called Syrah.
?This also applies to the style of the wine, lighter bodied, less oaked, more elegant wines which should be called Syrah so as to separate them from the bigger, more opulent Shiraz wines. Just like we have Pinot Grigio (Italian style, tight and crisp) and Pinot Gris (French style, richer and broader).
?Makes sense??
?This week’s wine is the epitome of Syrah. From an up and coming producer in the cool, up and coming Victorian region of Beechworth.
?The Willem Kurt Beechworth Syrah 2019 is a real cracker wine. Typical Syrah, it is slightly lighter in colour than a full-blown style of Shiraz, tight, cool-climate bouquet of subtle plums, dark berries and a smidge of dried herbs. The mid-weight palate is quite complex with lashings of divine flavours leading to a slightly grippy, lingering finish. Oh Yum! This wine is raring to go right now and yet will continue to evolve over the next few years to truly become Dynamite!!!
