THIS WEEK’S WINE REVIEW
?Friday, October 13, 2023:? This week I am talking about Gamay – a brighter, lighter style red wine, which most Aussies would know as Beaujolais. Even then most people would know Beaujolais Nouveau which is the lighter/closer to a Rosé example of the variety, which in the 1980s and 1990s used to be rushed across the globe by airfreight to see which producer could get his wines into the market first. Thankfully that bizarre practice and the insipid wines it produced, has faded away and today Beaujolais Nouveau is a very pleasant, enjoyable, light red wine. Ideal on its own, for picnics and lighter style antipastos.
?There is also a bigger, deeper, more profound style such as the Beaujolais form, Morgon – it is into this second category that this week’s wine falls, namely, the outstanding Golding WINES ‘Ombre’ Adelaide Hills SINGLE VINEYARD SERIES Gamay 2022 (Vegan Friendly). Probably the best Aussie Gamay I have tasted to date. It has a deep inky purple colour, a very attractive bouquet of gently stewed cherries with just a hint of earthiness and spice. The palate is superb having charming red berry flavours of great depth and complexity leading to an elegant, long, lingering finish. OH YUM!!! TRULY BRILLIANT!
